This is what is so frustrating about this hire. Other coaches DID want the job.
LSU could have had their pick of any G5 (outside of Herman) head coach or any P5 assistant. I just find it bizarre that they think Da Coach O is the best of all that talent

Dubose was a terrible hire. I laughed and knew he would be fired within a few seasons.
He won the SEC

I've always felt Shula did a decent job considering the circumstances. Don't think Saban would have even remotely considered coming to Alabama if for the work Shula did in repairing the program.
Shula did absolutely NOTHING to repair that program. Recruiting was horrible. The offenses were abysmal and never showed any signs of improvement. He tanked that 2005 team that had far more potential than the end result showed. He won ONE rivalry game against a dogshit Tennessee team and tried everything in his power to lose that game. Not to mention he cost Prothro his career and flushed the 2004 season down the drain by electing to keep Brodie in the game during the arse fricking of a cupcake.
I don't know why it's so difficult for Bama fans to admit Shula was a terrible coach. There's no way of spinning it into a positive. This sort of delusion is the reason he could've been retained an extra year and any hopes of luring in Saban would've vanished.

Because you aren't taking into account the state of the program when he agreed to come here.
There was a reason we had to hire a former player who had no experience at all being a head coach. If you don't understand that, then it's on you.

People have forgotten how the Dubose and Price hires were considered great at the time.
There wasn't much reason to think Dubose wouldn't succeed as he'd had so much success in his role and was a known quantity and Price was considered one of THE spread/run and shoot offensive gurus of that time.
I think LSU clearly settled here and could have gotten a more high-profile hire. I think Coach O will be ok, but it's not the kind of hire you make if you have excellence as the goal

Alabama was more than a little fortunate that a coach like Saban was available, when they desperately needed a great hire to happen. I'm afraid LSU won't be so fortunate.

That is correct. The domino's just fell in Bama's favor.
Guess the domino's fell in Texas favor for LSU.

Shula (snip) but man he could blow a 4th quarter lead.
NCAA. Sanctions. Depth.
Hes unfairly maligned. I have no idea if he would have been a good coach under normal circumstances. But I don't think Saban would have been successful under those circumstances (down 21 scholarships).

It was awful. In 2000 Bama was ranked #3 going into the season and finished 4-7 I beleieve. Coach O = slightly better version of Dubose.

I'm not convinced of this, yet.

Went fishing more in the Fall on Saturdays back then. Did enjoy the cheap ticket prices back then though, plus tickets were easy to come by .....
