I'm done with Sumlin but I don't see him going until next year.
It's pansy football, plain and simple.

10-win (or more) teams we have beaten under Sumlin:
2012 Alabama
2012 OU
2013 Duke
9-win teams we have beaten under Sumlin
2015 Miss. State
8-win teams we have beaten under Sumlin
2012 Miss. State
2013 Ole Miss
2014 Auburn
2015 Miss State
2016 Tennessee (current wins)
2016 Auburn (current wins)
10+ win teams we have lost to under Sumlin
2012 Florida
2012 LSU
2013 LSU
2013 Auburn
2013 Missouri

8-win teams we have lost to under Sumlin
2014 LSU
2014 Louisville
7-win or less teams we have lost to under Sumlin:
2015 Auburn
2016 Miss. State
2016 Ole Miss
If a team is overall a 9-win team or less on the season, we will lose to that team 50% of the time. If you take JFF out of the equation, we will lose to a 9-win overall team 71% of the time.
If a team is overall a 10-win team or greater on the season, we will lost to that team 79% of the time. If you take JFF out of that equation, we will lose to a 10-win overall team 100% of the time.
Unacceptable if you ask me.

Louie Bellina said today on Texags radio that Mazzone is the best OC in the country. So there's that.
Louie Bellina is a total moran then, and I say that without any hyperbole. Our offense is dogshit, and the team has collectively quit.

Even when the offense looked good, it was 100% explosive plays. To me the coach controls consistency and efficiency which we are not.
Trevor Knight, fresh Trayveon Williams, and Josh Reynolds accounted for any positive statistic working in Mazzone's favor.

Give me Kliff at OC when he gets fired but don't fire sumlin. This year we are likely playing at home on thanksgiving for a birth in the CFP if Trevor doesn't get injured

I have said this multiple times to people.
The score was 7-14 and we had just made MSU punt the ball, Jake had to come in for a hurt Trevor (that had just got going on that last drive 5/5 and had 30 yards rushing on 2 attempts), we then go 3 and out after Jake just misses getting the first down by a few inches.
What happens on the next play? MSU throws a 60 yard bomb on our backup DB to go up 21-7.

QB goes down. Backup can't get the first down. Depth.
DB goes down, gives up big play. Depth.
He's had 5 years to recruit and coach up SEC level depth. 5 years from now we're going to be making excuses about how we could have sniffed the Playoffs again this year if only _______.

This has nothing to do with Knight getting hurt. We got gashed on defense vs them and Ole Miss. there is zero excuse for that

Haha our starting qb gets injured, we lose the next two games by one score each and people call for the HCs job. Lol. We we didn't come out like we should have against MSU but we still win that game barring the injury.
Posted on 11/21/16 at 1:12 pm to swaggyp
Maybe it's because Knight looked like shite in the games before and we could have easily won the last three games if our defense was worth a shite.
Also, we have no running game any more and that happened before Knight's injury.
All of these things have nothing to do with knight's injury and are directly attributable to Sumlin's past two recruiting classes and his assistants and coordinators.

Yes, we could and probably would have won that game with Knight.
The problem I have with that game, Ole Miss, etc... is that our defense just isn't very good. How many years are we going to continue trotting that out onto the field? I blame this directly on the kind of offense we play. No way we are going to have a great defense when they practice against an offense like ours.
Booger said it on TV on Monday... as long as A&M and Ole Miss play basketball on grass... their defense is going to be soft. This experiment with bubble screens, handing the ball off 8 yards deep without a fullback when you need a half yard for a first, etc..etc.. isn't working against the better defenses in the SEC. Just don't think it ever will.
We got the same basic physical issues with Sumlin players. I really think this is a function of what our defense practices against. If you want to win 8 or 9 games every year we probably have the right coach and philosophy at this time.

I'll be the first to say that after the Alabama loss, I believed we would get it together and we'd finish strong. Maybe we'd split the OM and LSU games and finish with 2 losses.
It isn't that we've lost two games with a backup QB. It's who we lost to and how we lost. Those are beatable teams. Sumlin came out and admitted this team lacks killer instinct. Who else is to blame for that. If you can't get your team, that's playing for a spot in the CFP, to line up to rip people's heads off, what can you motivate a team to reach for?
If we want to avg 8.5 wins, we're gravy. If we want to claim our place among the CFB elite, we have to ask ourselves if this is the right guy at the helm. My mind is made up. If he stays, I hope he proves me wrong.

That is what has me to hesitant to replace Sumlin. If our problem was simply the QB position, or the OL, or any piece of the offense we could point at how Sumlin has mismanaged QB recruits and coordinators on the offense and he deserves to be fired for this mismanagement.
But really it is our defense that failed us this year, not the offense. I mean our backup QB kinda sucks but its the defense that has gotten worse in year 2 of Chavis with a top 5 pick. That shows we have a problem of depth and talent on the defense, which seems like a bigger problem than Sumlin.
In fact what worries me is the idea that Sumlin maybe has hit the ceiling of our program without lucky lightening-in-a-bottles like JFF (and even then all it takes is a single misstep and all that momentum is gone). We thought that a SEC rebrand, and fancy new buildings, and all the money we could find would overcome our repulsive (to the demographic that is good at football) brand and our stench of decades of mediocrity, but it turns out it is harder to run from our past than we thought.

Not really, he is responsible for our recruiting.

You are not going to get many people here and even less on TA to agree with this, but in the back of most of our minds, I tend to think this is a fear we all have. Even a legitimate, almost unanimously agreed-upon current top 10 defensive coordinator has actually regressed year over year with the talent we have. There's just no depth. If it was only Sumlin who has had this problem, we could point to his recruiting and say he neglected defense, but the truth is we had no defensive depth under Sherman or Fran and little at the end of RC's tenure either. We seem to be able to land one or two NFL starters almost at all times, but we don't have talent across the D, have 0 at linebacker and haven't really for 16 years if you don't count Von who was a hybrid, and never have a second string that's worth a darn. It just doesn't seem that A&M is capable of getting enough good defenders, especially the front 7 or so guys, to compete with the big boys. 9 wins or so plus maybe a bowl win may actually be our ceiling without a once in a lifetime guy like Johnny.

Kinda.
I mean he is the one who actually tries to sign the kids, but (metaphorical) we are all responsible for what the Texas A&M brand looks like to recruits. We created that corps block that looks on TV like we grow white skinheads the same way Nebraska grows corn. We decided to wrap our brand in the military and political conservatism even though neither are very appealing to the demographic that is best at football. We sucked for decades prior to Sumlin thereby giving him no history to sell like almost every other program we are competing with has.
Sumlin has fricked up some in recruiting (mostly with who he has hired and how he managed QBs last year), but really the only success he has had was when he created a new brand for us (as the hip and young swag team) that is 100% opposed to everything the engineers that run our ship have wanted to be seen as for decades. That shows us how fricked up our real brand is, because when Sumlin's smoke and mirrors brand fell apart so did our recruiting.
Hell, even when things were going perfectly our best class under Sumlin (which then means since 1991 or some shite like that) was barely top 5 in a SEC West division where three teams not including us had top 6 classes that year. To compete in this division we need 2014 to be an average year and a kind of year we have NEVER had in modern times (aka a top 3 class year) needs to be our up years.
I don't know if any coach that doesn't already have a national title (think Saban to Bama or Urban to tOSU) can recruit at that level here. Maybe what we want we simply can't have due to mistakes from our past.
Sometimes just throwing money at a problem when you can't fix the root cause just makes the problem worse. I am not saying Sumlin is the answer, I am just saying you can't pin all our problems on him.

They were having this discussion on other message boards.
1) There is only one coach in the SEC with 8+ wins per season since expansion...Nick Saban
2) There are only 13 coaches win a better winning % at Power 5 schools.
3 Urban Meyer Ohio State
6 Jimbo Fisher Florida State
7 Chris Petersen Washington
8 Bob Stoops Oklahoma
9 David Shaw Stanford
10 Nick Saban Alabama
12 Dabo Swinney Clemson
13 Gary Patterson TCU
15 Mark Richt Miami
16 Bobby Petrino Louisville
19 Jim Harbaugh Michigan
21 Guz Malzahn Auburn
22 Hugh Freeze Mississippi
24 Kevin Sumlin Texas A&M
3) Patterson probably falls off this list after his current 5-5 season. Hughe Freeze will likely have a "show cause" and have to vacate most of his wins.

Sumlin has only hit his own ceiling, which is lower than we expect because he's soft on the field and negligent off. Just like Fran hit his ceiling and Sherman hit his and RC his.
We still don't know what our program's ceiling is, and we won't until we land a high caliber coach.
