How good of a passer is Hurts really?
the biggest issue is timing at this point. he's got a really strong arm and good accuracy. he's got a lot of room to improve but improving his timing will improve his accuracy.
quote:
benefits from Kiffin's schemes and play calling which allow for easy completions
definitely. Kiffin calls about 3-5 jet sweeps type plays per game and those count as completions when he tosses the ball 2 feet.
quote:
Hurts looks inaccurate when throwing the ball downfield on routes 15 yards plus.
Sometimes. He needs to get cleaner with his mechanics and get more comfortable with those routes. Definitely not his strong suit.
quote:
Hurts completes some longer throws because receivers are so open.
yep. he can buy a lot of time for those receivers to get open. he'll make a play or two when it looks like he might just throw it away after a long scramble.
quote:
Hurt left a lot of yards off the stat sheet against Rocky Top because he couldn't hit receivers in stride.
maybe not a whole lot. but he didnt have a good day throwing the ball at all. Still kicked arse though

fricking awful?
That's cute coming from a L5U fan.
But I guess you are the experts when it comes to fricking awful QB play so you may be right.

Again, I'm not trolling Bama fans. LSU hasn't known great QBing since Tom Hodson (I'm dating myself). And there will be LSU fans who will reply that Mauck, Russell and Flynn were great QB's in college, which they were not. However, my point is that if Bama can be beaten this year it will take a team with a defense that can limit Bama's running game and force Hurts to pass from the pocket and be able to cover Bama's receivers. Is that not accurate?

Lemme guess.. You know just the team!

Spot on answer to the original question. No doubt, Hurts has been below average at hitting deep throws... but then again, he's a freshman. That part will incrementally get better over time. Even so right now, Alabama's receivers are good enough that DB's still have to respect them in the backfield space, and if so... that's still doing their job and it reflects well in to the running game.

FWIW, Hurts is 4th in the SEC in QBR, and Alabama is 32nd nationally in Team Passing Efficiency, which would put them 4th in the SEC. If you want to go by just passing offense per game, Alabama is 54th, which I believe is 5th in the conference.

It comes down to his decision making because Saban never puts his QB in the position to
Win or lose the game.
If he plays within the system like Saban preaches to all QBs it must be on the defense to create havoc and put what Saban tells him in doubt
I am sure he is very much a cocksure young
Man wanting to prove himself
Let him prove he can create turnovers and easy LSU points

I disagree with a lot of people in here. Sure, Hurts has some freshman misses, but he is a good passer. He can make all the throws, and has- including passes 20+ yards. He is top twenty in the nation at completing passes that travel 20+ yards in the air.
Look at his stats. He has had good passing days in the majority of games this year. Of course his timing isn't going to be the best, he was throwing to high school WRs just a year ago. Also, our pass pro has been suspect this year, so the fact that he's been able to pass as well as he has is very impressive.
I'd give him a solid B in passing performance this year.
A grade of C just isn't very accurate IMO.

He has had some inconsistencies throwing the ball and was especially bad against Tennessee. On the whole of the season he's been good.
All from PFF this week:
All from PFF this week:
quote:
He has excelled on throws between zero and 20 yards through the air from the line of scrimmage, as he has completed 70 percent of his attempts in that range with five scores and just two interceptions. Accounting for his 14 throwaways and one pass where he was hit as he was in the act of throwing, he has connected on 112 of 162 attempts.
quote:
As much as he has done a great job protecting the football, Hurts had made a lot of big plays with his arm through the first half of this season. On throws travelling 20 yards or further downfield, Hurts has gone 14-for-40, and with two of those incompletions coming as a result of dropped passes. He has an adjusted accuracy percentage of 40.0 percent, ranking 18th among all quarterbacks, and the best among freshman signal callers. He has also gone 16-for-29 on throws between 10 and 19 yards downfield, so he’s finding big plays when necessary.
quote:
Perhaps more importantly, his ability to find big plays has improved over the past three weeks. In the wins over Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee, Hurts has completed eight of the 18 passes of 20 yards or further downfield he has attempted, while in the opening four weeks of the season he completed just six of the 22 he attempted.

Truthfully I wonder what A&M's pass rush has in store for Bama
They have looked much more dominant this season so far
We will have to see because it might be that Hurts is already damaged goods before coming to
BR
Saban may start acting like Steve Spurrier with his QB position for the rest of the season
