I think it was Gingrinch's "Contract with America" in 1994 that cemented the polarization we see today. The resulting "Republican Revolution" ended an era that saw conservative, moderate and liberal views within each party. Moderation was ejected from both parties as the Republicans became staunchly conservative and Democrats liberal as a reaction.
I think you are absolutely right. Gingrich and his scorched earth approach to politics really damaged both parties' ability to work together and compromise. That, IMO, started the division and polarization that has brought us to where we are today. The old guys who knew how to get things done by working across the aisle were starting to retire, and the young guns who were coming up thought it was a better approach to demonize their opponents policies and also as individuals. It became ugly.
The rhetoric continues to ratchet up, and I'm not sure where it stop. There is no decency or civility in politics anymore. It's all about scoring political points and making one side right and the other wrong, painting each other as evil and uncaring, as indecent people. How do you compromise with someone who is evil? It's a short step to violence, I'm afraid.

I'm kinda expecting another bomb to drop on Trump in the next few hours. It's Friday afternoon.
The Summer Zervos story may be the most damaging yet. Because it was more recent and he was married, preying on an Apprentice contestant. That one is ugly.

We seem to be standing at this threshold. Our own idiot governor has openly advocated it.
My greatest fear is that Hillary Clinton will be assassinated. Her gender seems to represent the last straw for the crazies of the old guard who have seen their entitled status erode steadily over the past 30 years.

Oh, stop with the hyperbole
I heard people say the same brand of bs when Obama became president. Sure, plenty of crazy folks (on both sides of the aisle) will get mad after election day. And then they'll move on to demonizing the other side the next cycle.

Quite true. Main reason I rarely discuss politics irl anymore even though I used to be quite interested/active politically. Was having too many conversations where I'd just get ostracized for stating my position than exchanging ideas and compromising. It gets tiring.

does anybody really think this babe can make America great again?
Hillary Dazzled By A Balloon
looks like she said another 21 times yesterday that 'she cannot recall' when asked about the email and server issues. this is the same woman who made up a story about her helicopter taking sniper fire in Bosnia. She is a Brian Williams fabulist and the press never even mentions it.

Could not have said it better than either of you. Both options aren't ideal, and I'm just ready to get this thing behind us.

I didn't. There were the expected insults to him, his family and to all of his supporters, of course, but the level of near hysteria we're seeing at the prospect of HRC becoming president is unprecedented.
Perhaps it's the calls for and the threats of violence should HRC be elected that has me concerned. When the governor of a state blatantly says that blood shed may be necessary if she's elected, I wouldn't label that as hyperbole but, rather, as sedition.

this is pretty weird given Trump is being hung in effigy in this country, Trump supporters have been viciously attacked, and Democrats are aligned with the black lives matters group that has been doing riots and attacking police, and killing police. Trump was bullrushed at a rally by one leftwing kook but liberals get on here and act like it is Hillary who is in danger. they are always the victims. liberals always up on the cross.

Well, you won't deny being a violent extremist, so I can understand your support for Putin, the Syrian dictator Assad and Kentucky's strange governor.

Putin became aggressive during Obama's reign. the idea he has a problem with Democrats winning the white house is absurd. lol
nobody ever saw Democrats have a problem with Putina nd Russia until Wikileaks unloaded a bunch of embarrassing DNC and Hillary campaign emails.

So you want Putin's Pooters calling the shots in America if Trump is elected? You know that if he released his taxes, they would show that Trump is owned by the Russians, right?

usually teleprompter low IQ racist erection flaunting Obama starts stuttering when he tries to trash Trump.

What? The US government took out Saddam and Gaddafi, both Libya and Iraq are both worse off for it. And now we want to take out Assad? No thanks. Dictators keep the terrorists and radicals at bay in these shite holes.
Without them ISIS will only get stronger and will be a bigger threat to Europe and even the United States

you are so dumb. Putin has done anything he wants during Obama, why would he have a problem with Hillary who has praised him in past and bragged about meeting him? lol you leftwingers loved the Soviet Union and Putin is a relic from that. Alger Hiss and the Rosenbergs are liberal heroes.

So one can extrapolate that you wouldn't object to an American dictatorship that would keep radicals suppressed?

True, and though it wasn't as pronounced when Obama was elected, that started the ball rolling. The number of "Nationalist" militia groups in this country has exploded. The Cliven Bundy types. To make matters worse, Trump has given them a louder voice. A lot of them are ex-military, and they think compromise is for the weak.
For the most part, I think they're numbers are still really small, but there is an undercurrent of it right now, and the rhetoric coming from Trump just gives them more fuel to their fire. While everyone is worried about Muslims exploiting our immigration system, these assholes are the real threat.

the radicals in this country are Islamic terrorists and the Black lives matters people, both of which are are aligned with the Democrat party and stoked by the Democrat party.
basically every riot in this country is leftwing agitators.
the islamic terrorist who murdered 50 gay people in Orlando was a Hillary supporter as was the islamic terrorist who killed 4 people in a washington state mall. Hillary has taken a lot of money from Islamic countries that oppresse women, gays and children and these countries will expect favors in return.

Nope, no need for that. The US is a country of freedoms. We're not inundated with Muslims where their way is the only way.. yet.
