Someone posted it on Reddit too...could've been OP.
I don't understand what would cause him to quit...unless he wanted to start so bad that when he realized he was third string, he just gave up.
He could spin this by saying he's caused a lot of drama in the program the past two seasons that he thought it'd be best to step aside and just let the team perform, but I doubt it.
