Auburn fans: Why did your big rivals refuse to play at AU until 1960?

I was reading some Bulldawg history and they mentioned that Bama, UT, GT and UGA all refused to play there until UGA did in 1960. Is there any certain reason why? TIA

they said logistically they couldnt make it.
UF did play there though

The field was shitty

Auburn was not an easy place to get to back then. In the 60's, even 280 was a winding little highway all the way from Birmingham. Imagine how hard it was on UT to travel by bus from Knoxville. They played them in Birmingham until 1980 or so.

Didn't want to use outhouses and enjoyed the luxury of hot water.

we didnt see a need to play Auburn. auburn needed us but we could do fine without Auburn. When the state forced us to play we said ok but we wont play in Auburn.
If the Bama administration hadnt become so weak in the 80's we still wouldnt be playing there. Thats why if Auburn moves to the east and we stop the game, which we will, that will be the comeuppance we've been waiting for since the state MADE us play. Auburn was UAB or Troy with a better campus. Florida played there but Florida was worse than Auburn. florida just wanted to be recognized in some form. Tennessee didnt need them either. UT first went there in 78, and had a 42-0 lead at halftime

Thanks for the answers fellas. I guess I'm spoiled by our interstates and didn't anticipate the travel part.

Wrong. 1974 and Auburn won 21-0.

1980 game and that was the final. Half was more managable.
I cannot believe anyone would still support Alabama's reluctance to go to Auburn from the 80's.
What a zero.

Same reason a lot of teams wouldn't travel to Ole Miss or Mississippi State.
Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and State all played a lot of games in the big cities (Jackson and Birmingham) until the 70's (Alabama until 2000).

This reads as some sort of collection of minced memories sprinkled with a little hate and probably some frustration over a hot day in your strip mall town.

Georgia started playing there in 1960 and Georgia Tech didn't play there until 1970?
I thought Georgia athletics > Tech's?

The funny part is his manifesto goes out the window considering no one went to Tuscaloosa as well

Aubie brass will tell you the game want played because of the per diem or some other bullshite. No, we just were the team in the state and saw no value in playing. Similar to LSU playing Tulane or Ole Sis playing southern miss.

The best stadiums in the state were in Birmingham and Jackson.
I still very much remember going to the crappy games at Bryant Denny being a little band box as a 3-4 year old as they were building the first deck.

Got to love the bama fans that are obsessed with Auburn more than Bama

So...refusing to play in Auburn makes an athletic department better?
You DO know that LSU played at Auburn in 1903 and in 1908, right?
