For the 400th time, every school has a little extra here and there fall into players' pockets. Ole Miss took it to another level, used coaches, and was really arrogant about it. They rocked the boat and now they're paying the price.

Serious question:

Why aren't these parents working? We hear the same sob story every time this kind of news breaks, but why is it that these parents never work? Is every D-1 athlete's parents incapable of holding down a job or paying for basic necessities ?

Well I condemn him for agreeing to follow rules and then not following them, making his word as a man mean nothing.

Eh.....varying circumstances. You'd also be surprised at how good some of these kids are keeping their mouths shut to EVERYONE.

That said, I knew of plenty that personally enjoyed those perks. Also, the biggest cash avenue is the booster-provided jobs. Getting paid $25-25/hr in the summer to sit on your arse or run errands for the boosters family is cake (oh, and gosh, I forgot to return the company vehicle last week).

You expect an 18 year old to turn down money?

It is on corrupt cheating coaches like Freezus.

it doesn't matter what they do with money they are not supposed to be receiving. The way you tell it, it would be ok for a heroin dealer to sell his stuff on the streets but it's ok because he took care of mom.
they ARE breaking the law because of a little something called tax evasion. Did your guy pay taxes on the 2500 doubt it, did Mom doubt that oo

I just want to make a general comment that the concept of amateurism as some kind of important sports principle is outdated.

If somebody wants to argue that the university itself shouldn't be paying salaried athletes, I can buy that argument, but there is no good reason why an athlete can't use his own name and likeness for marketing purposes. The only reason why they can't is to protect revenue streams for the schools, conferences, the NCAA, and tv networks.

Student athletes should absolutely get paid. There is no reason not too, especially when you consider how much money the programs make. I get that some sports don't make any money and really that football is the big money make for a lot of teams. However, you can still pay these players, and still have the school profiting off them. You could base a % off the profits of each sport and divide that among the players. Also sells of jerseys and other merchandise that basically represents a player, like jersey number, could go to that player (small %). So the more popular a player (meaning the bigger the star), then the more that player can get paid.

Or you could have a base pay for all the power 5 conferences in the big 3 sports or other sports as well. Sure some sports will get left out, but then again how many of those athletes are on scholarship to begin with.

My freshman year I smoked with two players and got some free xbox games from another. I know they get paid well. All from the outside though. These guys do it to feel like they're a part of the program.

I knew a prominent Old Miss player that went on to the NFL. He spoke of cash filled handshakes from boosters. This was over 10 years ago.

High time these guys got a stipend. Alabama and Clemson played 15 games. That's damn near an NFL season.
