Stat differential skewed a bit by the 4 overtime game against Arkansas. 24 points surrendered in regulation. 30 more in overtime.

4OT game against Arky skews those stats a bit...

Don't really feel like looking it up, but my guess by looking at that schedule is that the games with Lawson averaged a lower "quality" offense as well... We were downright abysmal this year.
ETA: Tuscaloosa beat me to it.

Still recovering from the juke Coker put on him in the IB. Surprised his fragile body recovered from such a hard fall.

This thread topic was masterfully designed and presented. It's one of the best troll threads I've seen since the season ended. It's always amusing to watch barners and coonasses just run over each other to get into a topic that they have no possible way of succeeding in.
My one question to the Auburn folks here is this.....if you know this is going to be a troll thread and the topic is one that you can't refute (Auburn's shitty defense and the players on that unit), why do you even respond and put yourselves in an impossible situation? Really!

I think most people that understand football realize great defense is a team effort. You can possess great talent but if the guy to your left or right or behind you doesn't do his job you will have less production personally. Barring injury the NFL will see the ability level of CL and MA. Maybe Steele will finally put a D on the field that plays as a unit. Who knows? I am not holding my breath. A baboon can see both MA and CL have elite talent...a baboon can also see our D hasn't played well as a unit in years.

Auburn redshirt sophomore edge rusher Carl Lawson will return to school for the 2016 season.
Lawson broke the news on his Twitter account via pictures from the film "The Wolf of Wall Street" along with the hashtags #WarEagle and #2016-17. The decision was later confirmed through Lawson's father. We have considered Lawson one of the top edge players in this class (top four, at the very least), but he has yet to stay healthy over the last two years. That will be the key for next season. Lawson can be dominant on the field.

Anyone saying Carl Lawson and Monty Adams are overrated is trolling. Simple.

I enjoy it, because it shows which of the cult members are on duty. I love to respond when it is Tuscaloosa's shift. He is so easy.

So is this an admission that Auburn is where elite defenders go to hide/die? kidding...
But in all seriousness, what is the thing that's holding them back? Generally, elite players bring the talent level of the players around them up. If I'm commanding a double team, someone's got to be either free or solo against a weak link to go do work. Alternatively it means you've got an extra DB out there just ready to pick balls off... I don't doubt these guys have better than average talent... elite to me implies that they not only have the physical "measurables", but that they've been developed into skilled players that can impact the game. I just don't see it from those 2 right now and I don't see how you can put that on anyone but Garner + a now revolving door at DC. Just my opinion and really meant to encourage discussion but I'm sure someone will take offense.

Auburn's defense showed flashes last season. Whether is be because of coaching, talent coming together or a combination of the two, they played some incredible games. However, they also played some bad games and downright terrible games. Bad games came at the beginning, but the defense improved throughout the year.
People are forgetting that Auburn only gave up 22 to Alabama before a garbage touchdown with seconds left, 10 to Memphis and a top rated quarterback prospect, 10 to Texas A&M, 20 to Georgia and 27 to Ole Miss which isn't all that bad considering how good their offense was. From October 31st and beyond, Auburn's defense was better than people like to admit.

Boom had Auburn playing much better defense by year end. They were in the right spots, tackling pretty well and not busting coverages. They were a competitive defense.

20 to Georgia
Aaaaand lost all credibility. Missouri held us to 9.
I won't claim to be an expert on Auburn's team and I'm certain you watched them more closely than me, but I just didn't get the feel even by the Georgia game that they were playing particularly well defensively. It got to the point where I was genuinely surprised when we were able to score TDs last season. Perhaps that game was more of an outlier and the other late season games were better (holding Memphis to 10 this season looks good on paper, but their coach was out the door already right?). Either way, I think this season will be pretty telling. This would be that random arse Auburn year to go 11-1 or so when no one expects it.

I forgot that Auburn also only gave up 17 to Mississippi State.
I don't like Kevin Steele and don't think he's a good coach, but there's talent in Auburn. And if they continue to build upon last year, Auburn could be better than people think.
