Not if the coaches were fired before they coached a single game. That IS the definition of institutional control.
In the Tunsil case, no evidence at all that a coach was involved. Just Nissan Cannon Motors. Tunsil will be doing there adds when he signs his $15,000,000 contract in May with the Titans.

If a player or recruit receives benefits from a booster, the NCAA cannot hold the school responsible.

Whatever happens will be effectively a slap on the wrist. Vacating wins will hurt but won't affect the university going forward. Dropping a couple scholarships will have minimal impact when some SEC universities are signing 30+ in a season. They will just bracket the lost year(s) and go on as usual. I know lots of people are hoping for something major, but there's just not enough smoke for the fire to be that big.
I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
I usually agree with you but you're wrong about losing scholarships not hurting because some teams sign 30+ and I think that's because you misunderstand the situation that allowed UT to sign 30. Those classes were anomalies that couldn't have happened if the Kiffin-Dooley Era hadn't left the cupboard bare and I don't mean bare in terms of bad talent (although there was that) but bare as in no one was there. And although we had two large classes, those classes were also back counted (IOW, many of them counted towards previous classes/scholarship slots that were never filled by previous staff. A few counted forward to the next class and took their slot from what would've been the next year's recruiting class. Even when we took them all in the same cycle, there was never actually 30+ in any signing class as several were counted for other years.`).
It would take years of roster neglect akin to severe scholarship sanctions for a team to be able to sign 30+ and no one in that situation is faring well roster wise.
That said, you're probably right that the NCAA won't do much. The big thing for OM is that this spans multiple years and multiple sports and the NCAA really doesn't like it when you've got several sports with violations even if they're small violations.

Is this like when an AD says they 100% support a coach and then fire them 2 days later?
Posted on 1/31/16 at 1:47 am to 3down10
Why is the AD releasing statements? This kind of thing needs to be under wraps.

You better just stick with beating each other off. You stand a much better chance of finishing that.

Completely wrong
1) It has been widely reported that we received a NOA. So, not saying anything would seem evasive.
2) The facts are far less than the rumor. So, he is trying to get the basics out there without going into details.
Ross knows what he's doing. And, his statements have been widely praised by the national media, which is downplaying this whole thing. OM is gonna come out of this smelling like a rose.
And that's the problem with big buildups. We have heard so much about Cheating Bears for the past 3 years. When the reality ends up being 10% of the myth, it actually begins to look like we've been picked on. You end up getting backlash sympathy and come out of the deal stronger. It happens in politics. And it's happening with Ole Miss.

The delirious ones are the ones who've been saying for years we were about to get hammered. Now, when the "hammer" drops, it's crickets.

you do realize that the hammer, if it arrives, will come much later right?

The NCAA doesn't deliver a hammer with the notice of allegations. Get with an Auburn fan about how the NCAA works if you are unfamiliar.

The other case is the Tunsil punishment. That is how I read it. Since it has already been enforced and it deals with Tunsil himself, not OM it is a seperate case.

I am familiar with the penalties for secondary violations.
This whole thing is going from: "how many years of post season bans, and will they get the beath penalty?" to "wonder how many scholarships they will lose?".
Basically, the three year investigation was a flop. They got UNC and Miami on dozens of primary violations and they came out fine. This will be less than they got. That's just math.

You are also forgetting the role that politics plays in punishment decisions by the NCAA. Miami and OU were out of control in the 80's and nothing of significance happened to them. But then SMU and A&M had examples made of them. There are several untouchable schools: Notre Dame, Texas, and Michigan. And then others are treated better than the rest. Unfortunately, I think Ole Miss will not have enough "political pull" and will have examples made of them. OM is not like UNC or Miami.

If you actually believe this, you are a complete moron.
I realize you want to believe this but that doesn't make it true.

You need to find out how many current kids took their ACT test at a certain place in Mississippi, the same place a former coach just got in huge trouble over. Kids who lived no where near the school, who made special trips to take the test at one particular place.
The 2nd letter upcoming will bring that to light....,.

You have to understand that most of these Ole Miss fans who are so confident that nothing will happen because of OM's "cooperation" didn't even have hair on their balls when Bama got hit for the textbook scandal. Hell, their daddies didn't even yet have hair on their balls when the Albert Means scandal happened.

Ole Miss will lose a couple scholarships over this. I thought it was a big deal at first, but this is really overblown.

It led to Saunders.. and it's why Ole Miss had Attorneys present during the ULL investigation
And there's even MORE that you guys have totally forgotten about
