They have changed the amount of money given for BF but the threshold is still very low and there are many ways to get academic scholarships to cover the cost of a UF education, which is relatively cheap in-state.
Graduate students do not bring as much money to their institutions; it is the faculty running the labs driving in the research dollars. Athletes absolutely bring more money to schools than students.
I am not advocating for a stipend for players. I think players should be able to make and get money any way they can (legally).

It would not work without the emotional support that colleges can bring, the Nfl will die a slow death in the next decade.

Nobody forced Jalen to go to college and play football. He could have waited and trained until he could enter the draft. You start paying players and it will ruin the college game. I will say that stipend amounts need to be examined and should be higher IMO. What these student athletes seem to forget is that they are getting a quality education, access to nutrition and training, room and board and top notch medical treatment for free. That's worth a good bit if you add it up for 3-4 years.

Student athletes bring in way more value to a school than the value of a scholarship. It is an unbalanced system.
And we hear stories of how athletes are steered to certain majors so that classes don't conflict with practice schedules. It is not as benevolent a system as you are making it seem.
They bring in more than the scholarship. I'd agree with that. They should be allowed to get a job. However, they are not bringing in more than what is spent on them and that is the most important element that no one wants to address. If that was the case, there wouldn't be such a small number of schools turning a profit each year.
Go tabulate what it costs to support an athletic program, to provide equipment, to have a training staff, to tape ankles, to just purchase those mobile Gatorade stations, and come tell us how much of a profit the athletes generate.
You and others conveniently forget there are UF grads from the Post WWII era onward that have season tickets, and whether it's Jalen or someone else, as long as UF has a football team, those alumni will be buying tickets and attending games and paying booster fees. A huge chunk of revenue has zero to do with individual players.

Recruitment and signing day were a little different in the old days, if "history books" are to be believed.

I agree that his comment was stupid. But college football is obviously an NFL farm system. They aren't allowed to enter until 3 years after high school. Where can an 18 year old go to play professional football in America?
That is a NFL rule and I am sure they have it in place because only .0000001% of the kids coming out of high school would be ready for the NFL

Why would it not work for the NFL when it works for every other professional league?

I'm sure he would've gotten that free ride had it not been for CFB

The only reason these frickers have a chance, is because we, the productive ones, have a fixation on their "sporting" skills, if we ever decide that our lives and attention needs to be focusing on more worthwhile activities, their asses will starve.

He does sound like an SJW. Maybe he should transfer to USJW and rub elbows with Jonathan Butler and go on some fake hunger strikes.
There it is Jalen - transfer up to Mizz. Problem solved.

I read this on another site. This guy is simply the dumbest athlete in all of collegiate sports. Let him walk on and pay his own way with student loans and find out what slavery really feels like.

You are completely and utterly clueless. You think professors are running labs? Are you retarded? 90% of the work is done by the grad students. Yes, you are retarded, very very retarded.
You know nothing about the grant system. The professors put their name on grants. It's the grad students doing the work. Without the grad students, none of the work could be done. This isn't saying the profs are not key ingredients, but just as McElwain can't go out there and throw passes, the research professors can't attend to all the tasks in those labs.
You're out of your element here and don't know what you're talking about. Stop digging.

I'm pretty receptive to the college athletes getting paid argument, but when you equate something that you have a choice to participate in to being owned by another person and forced to do whatever they want your entire life..................you just probably aren't very smart.
At worst, you could argue it's indentured servitude although even that is too extreme, the closest is probably an old style apprenticeship that you had to complete in order to go into your chosen profession but that doesn't have the same emotional appeal as using the word slavery.

That's the best answer there is, it's COLLEGE football. Take it out of college if you want them treated like something other than college STUDENT athletes.

Because the majority of football training is off the field. In basketball and baseball, people play a ton of games and that's where they learn their craft. In football, the physical dynamics of the game make it different. A minor league for football would be missing that element: training staff, massive weight rooms and conditioning programs etc. That part is extremely expensive. I'd speculate that PEDs would be out of control in such a system.

Mark my words, the NFl will die before the college game, there is emotion in the college game, the pro's are all about money.

No professional league has a minor league that is as popular as college football is (comparatively).
Being affiliated with universities matters.
