The fact that I'm getting downvotes on this shows that rantards don't know shite about football.

UNC wasn't offside in the ACCCG when they recovered the onside vs Clemson this year, but they got the call. What goes around, comes around....right Ole Miss?

The thing I find the most hilarious -- other than the fact that some people think a kicker's plant foot can be "off-sides" -- is that there seems to be a Wofford fan there and some Clemson fans are mad as hell at him for posting on a Clemson board. It'd be like Bama and Auburn fans getting riled up at a Samford poster.

Apparently Dabo thought Bama hit Clemson player #1 like Clemson hit the SC player and "didn't give them a chance to catch"

My point is that there was no fair catch call wahsoever. An arm MUST be raised or signal made in order to make a fair catch.
There was none whatsoever... and thus Clemson is not afforded any "first touch" protection. JMHO

Not sure this is true. I think if the ball is kicked into the air and never touches the ground, then the receiving team player must be given an opportunity to catch the ball whether he signals fair catch or not.
Problem is, the receiving team didn't have a player there.

Karma. Steelers get theirs this weekend.

A fair catch doesn't give you a special right. You can't drill an onside catch receiver. Bama didn't drill anyone

That is absolutely correct. Once the ball crossed the 45 and remained beyond the 45, it's a free ball, provided a Clemson player doesn't signal for a fair catch.

Kiffin's take -
quote:
Lane Kiffin said he was "stunned" when Saban called the onside kick. Said he had to be careful not to make a face that would give it away.

Not 100% on college rule, but pretty sure it's the same across the board. If the ball is in the air and hasn't touched a return man or hit the ground then it's kick-catch-interference. The return team is always allowed a chance to catch the ball while in the air even if no one is around. That's why the kicker tries to bounce it into the air then it's anyone's ball.

Tigerman gets it. You can't just smear the potential returner anymore. Those guys were always coming up injured. The old way to get an onside side was to:
1. Kick at player on receiving team
2. Send fast, mean LB at player
3. Destroy player
4. Get ball 10 yards
5. Recover ball
Unfortunately the receiver is rendered sterile by the abusive hit before the ball even arrives. Now you have to give that player a change to catch it before you destroy him, saving the lives of the poor bastards on the "hands team."
In the 2014 SC play they smear the SC player right as the ball touches the "returners" hands. The returner can't hold on, and the ball is recovered by Clemson. The Champ game play in no way looks like that play. Dabo is woefully confused. His argument would be the same as claiming Eddie Jackson should have been called for pass interference on his interception because he didn't give the WR a chance to catch the ball. Eddie didn't plow the reciever, he caught the ball before it made it to the reciever. We call that an interception instead of pass interference. FB lesson over

Dabo was grasping because he knew that was the end of the game. Totally legal play. All Clemson had to do was have someone in the vicinity.
Clemson was caught off guard by a bunch of stuff all night.

but it was definitely aided by Clemson not expecting it and being nowhere near the ball.
In one of the interviews after the game, Saban said that they noticed early in the game that they that option based on what that they had seen from that Clemson player on film and how he was doing the same thing in the game last night. So when an opportunity came at time when he thought Bama really needed it, he made the call to do it.

With that tight front line Clemson was using, Dabo and his staff should have beaten it into them that of an onside kick is attempted the very first thing you do is call for a fair catch.
Apparently they didn't do that because Dabo's dumbass thought they automatically had a right to make a recovery.
Great call and execution by Bama.

They had no one over there to catch it so it would not have mattered.
My feelings too. It was the single most perfect onside kick ever I think lol. It had a little fade on it like the golfers do.

Spot on.
I stand corrected. I thought the ball was bounced with one of those one foot short hop kicks. But upon the replay, it looks like it was in the air all the time.
Clemson still didn't have anyone there to call for a fair catch, though.
