Losing TSD hurt more than most realize. He was a leader and emotional catalyst. Add in the injury to Dunans and not yet having Purifoy, and this season feels sabotaged. It's hard for the casual fan or outsider to have faith that things are getting better because the win/loss totals (and even the product on the court) aren't really changing yet.

We look like a team playing pickup ball because that is what we are.
None of our players have played together before, none of our players have experience with the system and nearly all of them are playing out of their ideal position

GC. Why aren't we gelling then? There is only one one and done player on the team this year, Harris...

Of the 9 Scholarship players for AU this year that haven't missed the whole year due to shoulders/eligibility
-4/9 have missed multiple games due to injuries
-6/9 played their first game for Pearl this year
-5/9 played their first major conf bball game this year
-1/9 is Cinmeon Bowers
Most teams trend positive and improve but it is obvious why our team hasn't.
From our original starting lineup to today
-There are 0 combined starts between starters pre Dunans injury
-3/5 starters are injured or Cinmeon Bowers benched
-2 freshman are in starting lineup who were known "raw"/projects

Also, keep in mind that Pearl's defensive identity is his full court press and aggressive style. Due to depth concerns, we simply can't play that way.
We have a team that isn't athletic/good enough to win in half court defense and isn't deep enough to play full court press. We are SOL on defense

The teams we are losing to in out of conference are actually legit bball programs since we play tough schedules now.
Harvard, MTSU, Hawaii... how could we ever be expected to compete with those juggernauts?

Believe it or not there has been a talent increase in the program as well with young guys like Horace Spencer, Bryce Brown and TJ Lang all young guys you can build system around.
There may be a talent increase but there certainly hasn't been a results increase.

So ya a lot has changed if you actually followed the team
I follow the team, we are getting it pushed in just like we always have. Barely even competing.

Clearly showing you know absolutely nothing about basketball and don't keep up
Hawaii - They are 13-2 with their only 2 losses to top 20 RPI teams (Oklahoma by 3)
MTSU- RPI #70 and it was an OT road loss
Harvard- Made 4 straight NCAA tournaments and 6 straight 20+ win seasons

That's normally what happens when 6/12 scholarship players have missed multiple games due to injury/eligibility issues

Team chemistry and effort have definitely broken down and that is a concern.
That being said, we only have 7 scholarship players available. You don't beat top 25 South Carolina or preseason SEC #2 Vanderbilt on the road with 7 players. Everyteam drops a dumb game like the Mizzou road game.

Dude give it up look at what you're doing. You're trying to justify losing to Hawaii and MTSU. Harvard maybe, but still they play in the Ivy League of course they win a lot of games against other slow white kids who study more than they practice.
Hawaii and MTSU are not good basketball teams, ever.
You can make whatever excuses you want but the fact is this team is no better from a results standpoint than any of our crap teams in the past under Lebo and Barbee. I didn't think we would win the NCAAT in Bruce's second year but I thought we would at least compete with other middling SEC teams and have a good shot at the NIT.
If you didn't at least expect that what were you excited about when we hired him?

KenPom has Hawaii ranked 55 (Colorado 53, LSU 56, Harvard 127)
FTR, Pearl's goal for this team was .500. Reality is that unless your starting 5 are all top 20 players, it takes time for them to play together in a system as a cohesive team. We won't start playing well until we retain our roster and get our guys playing together for multiple seasons. This season has been setback after setback with eligibility and injury issues. Gonna be another few years before we're to a point where you non-hoop fans will be happy

Hawaii and MTSU aren't elite teams, that isn't the argument. Both teams are quality teams and we lost on the road. We blew those games. We were up 10+ and absolutely handed the victory to both teams.
Unfortunately, when you have no depth and you have walkons playing crucial minutes in the second half, you lose road games like that.
For the record, MTSU has won 24+ in 3/4 seasons and Hawaii likely will win 25+ this season. So

Most of us weren't expecting to be lacking 3 of our most important pieces of the team for long stretches. That fact kinda makes it hard to say expectation should be reality.

Point to a team/coach that has turned around a program quickly in years 1-2 without getting 4-5+ top 25 players OR inherited a roster of returning players for yrs 1-2?
-Frank Martin won 20+ games every year at KState, he was under .500 in first 2 years and 17-16 year 3
-Mark Fox 20+ wins every year at Nevada. Sub .500 3 out of first 4 years
-Billy Kennedy went ~.500 for 3 years before his likely back to back 20+ win seasons

People forget that when Pearl showed up
-Only 1 starter and 2 backups were inherited from the worst SEC team
-Pearl had a show cause that didn't let him recruit for first class
-Pearl only had ~1month for 2015 early signing period
We have no "veterans," we have no guys who know the system and we don't have enough guys to fill out a roster. Got to give it time
ETA**: We made two huge mistakes under Pearl though, we should have signed Wesley Person JR. and we shouldn't have released Sam Logwood from NLI

Don't know about Sam, but it wasn't a mistake to not sign Wesley Person JR.
I don't think he wanted to come here anyway. Plus, Auburn knew probably to stay away

Why did we let Purchase transfer to Hawaii? Would be nice to have another big man to run out there at least to absorb fouls.

Logwood is a ~6'7 athlete. He is a better version of TJ Lang less of a 3pt shooter.
Why would we want to stay away from Wesley Person Jr? He obviously is a pretty good player and we have had at least 2 open scholarships in consecutive years
