Because of the forward fumble. Made famous by the Oakland Raiders.

Nah... This has been my best football weekend in two years... auburn won, Titans won, and on top of that LSU is melting down... UGA is a train wreck.

Had ole Miss player not facemasked on the first 2 point conversion, the play would be moot. He did, BA scored, Arkansas won, let the excuses come:)

The rules state a fumble is a ball that is not passed. So by definition a backward pass cannot be a fumble.
It cannot be fumbled until it is possessed by another player.

Let me ask a simple question.
When running the option, and the ball is pitched/passed back from a QB to an RB, if the ball hits the ground, can the RB pick it up and run?
In every instance I've seen, that's the case -- the RB runs, and then typically gets croomed.
There is a big difference between a pitch back/lateral and a fumble.

Or the trick play... bounce pass that seems incomplete to a WR who then throws the ball down field. We get two or three of those a week in CFB.

Ole Miss fans don't seem to understand the difference between intentional forward fumbles and intentional backwards laterals.

And the blocking downfield before the pass was caught with the pass being above the LOS, and on the same play the same guy was holding.
Ole Piss has won nothing in over 50 years except a crying contest to see whose teat they can suck.

You heard wrong. Tom Ritter was just arrested. He's looking at one month in jail. We should all be grateful.
This would almost be a wash even though we won the game. The rest of the SEC would owe us if we exchanged our win for Ritter getting fired/spending time in jail. It would almost be worth it.

Exactly.
I read an article about the official rules, and how it should have gone down, according to those rules.
According to those rules... the whole play was legal. Therefore, Arkansas beats Ole Piss for two years straight.

it was a fumble when it hit the ground but you can go backwards all you want. the rule is for people trying to "fumble" the ball forward. it was perfectly legal.

I don't know who the player was who caught the pass but that was one heads up play. Or, it was a designed play, nah, just a smart heads up.

No shite. You cannot FUMBLE a ball forwards on 4th down, but you can recover a fumble/backwards lateral and RUN it forward. Totally different things. Henry "fumbled" backwards (legal) and AC3 "ran" it forward. Had Henry fumbled it forward past the first down mark, Arkansas could not recover and retain possession.

But once the ball hits the ground, it is no different than a fumble.
The rule book is available to read online. The rule is clear. You should have looked it up before posting...then you wouldn't have looked like a fool.

The rules couldn't be clearer. Anyone with two brain cells together should be able to google the rule book and read for themselves. The fact that this continues to be debated is evidence of the fact that many fans here just aren't very smart.
From Rule 2:
ARTICLE 1. To fumble the ball is to lose player possession by any act other than passing, kicking or successful handing (A.R. 2-19-2-I and A.R. 4-1-3-I).
Forward and Backward Pass
ARTICLE 2. a. A pass is forward if the ball first strikes the ground, a player, an official or anything else beyond the spot where the ball is released. All other passes
are backward passes. When in question a pass thrown in or behind the neutral zone is forward rather than a backward pass.

but it makes no sense to me to allow the offense to advance a lateral that hits the ground and not a fumble... They're treated the same on the other three downs... Why the difference in 4th?
