Maybe the students just want to be able to recruit nationally and make their football program relevant again.
It's time for Mississippi to let it go and change their state flag anyway. After all, anyone who died fighting for the confederate flag is dead by now.

Why should the vote of a University that is primarily made up of out of state spoiled brats have a say in the flag of Mississippi. It's bad enough some of my tax dollars go to them, now they get to vote that counts?

Aside from this case of rampant vaginitis, can they even vote on something like this? Its the state flag. It doesnt fly at their discretion.

no Ole Miss is totally not a slave reference it is a train from Memphis that had an African american confederate solider as the conductor or something

That poster thinks this is about the confederate flag being REMOVED from the state flag, not simply removing the state flag.

Given the historical context of the term Ole Miss I wonder how long until the University drops that name completely.
The University of Mississippi!

The flag isn't the original state flag. It was adopted in 1924.
it was adopted in 1894. The flag used prior had a Bonnie Blue flag in the upper left corner, another flag of the Confederacy.

thank the Almighty we don't have "informed, educated' 20-yr olds running the country...I cant believe the audacity of 18, 19, 20 and 21 year olds thinking they have a "grasp" on life and feel the "oppressed"....GAG! They don't know anything; NOTHING about life. Yep, continue to pass judgment on people and their ways of the 19th century (no, I don't support slavery--what a disgusting thing, even though it still occurs in the world...how about raising hell about that!!) using 21st century logic...Just remember, jerk-wads, the kind of "world" you "think" you want can never be...there will all ways be someone in charge doing what they want...and throughout history, that means killing anyone that gets in the way....anyone. Go ask your buddies about Che, Lenin, Mao, Castro, and the like. You think you are "oppressed" here....go hang out in some place that those guys aforementioned used to run and see if you are "oppressed" or not...so, go to school, do your studies and SHUT UP!!!
just be glad they care about something. if your panties are in such a wad why don't you go to Ole Miss and protest? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Do I really have to explain this to you?
Why can't you look at the flag and say look how far we've come?
Let me give an example along the same lines. Nicholls st. COLONELS had to change their mascot because it was offensive(although when polling the student body, only 2% found it offensive). The fact of the matter is the fricking school is named after a confederate officer!
This fricking PC world we live in is fricking ridiculous. The worst thing on planet Earth is to hurt someone's feelings now

Let's get rid of the American flag because bad things have happened in America, at some point or other, and someone has surely been offended.

Looks like an overly sensitive out of state OM student down voted my question.

Do you mean the flag of the Republic of West Florida from 1810?
Although the name "Bonnie Blue" dates only from 1861, several authors have claimed that the Civil War flag is identical with the banner of the Republic of West Florida, which broke away from Spanish West Florida in September 1810 and was annexed by the United States 90 days later. In 2006 the state of Louisiana formally linked the name "Bonnie Blue" to the West Florida banner by passing a law designating the Bonnie Blue Flag as "the official flag of the Republic of West Florida Historic Region".
That flag was also incorporated into the flag of the Republic of Texas.
But it originated in Louisiana.

This goes past protesting a flag, it's something that's completely disrespectful to the state the school represents. In this case it isn't about what's on the flag, it's the fact that it IS THE STATE FLAG.
That flag is completely disrespectful to a large portion of the population it is supposed to represent. Since the "leaders" of our state don't have the guts to do what is right, they don't deserve the respect of having that flag flown.

If this were true then why did a majority of the state already vote to keep it?
