What I'm curious about is whether this is an official school policy or something the corps decided was a good idea. If it's an official school policy, isn't that the kind of thing school officials would inform a visiting team of?

I have no idea if it was official policy, but the CTs did line the field to keep people off as late as when I was in school in the late-late 90s.

It was part of popular belief though, that much I'm aware of. It was just a thing that was often stated amongst students and I'm sure the school didn't mind having a culture in the stands that didn't rush the field back then.

It caused several problems beyond this one. Even if informed I wouldn't be the least surprised if SMU just decided to do it anyway. It was that kind of game in the SWC.

The... what are they called? CTs?
Corps Turds. Yes.

Well, this didn't please the CT, so he got up, turned around and started kicking the cheerleader who turtled him, then pulled his saber and got shoved to the ground, at which point some officious-looking prick in a yellow raincoat ran out there and subdued the guy who wasn't brandishing a weapon. (that part always kind of confused me)
The guy in the raincoat is a sheriff I believe. He either saw it go down and grabbed the guy that started it or was just a homer grabbing the SMU guy. I have no idea which.

These days cops keep people in check along the side lines and for a short while we were allowed on the field after the game to hang out, throw the football and relax instead of tying the wade out of the stadium.

That ended when we joined the SEC though.

My whole thing is that if it isn't official policy, it might be likened to having someone run up to you and start screaming, "UNCOVER!" except without signs everywhere asking you to keep your hat off. See my point?

I don't discount that as a possibility either, though.

I couldn't tell from the short clip. It just looked like some guy grabbing the least-threatening person involved in the altercation from my point of view.

If ya thought this incident was bad, hell, there was a corps member murdered in a 1926 Waco riot.

That's because you're a smart feller. Very same thing happened my sophomore year ('76) when our company seniors happened to be OD's, against SMU. Our C.O. calmly walked out on to the field, explained to the SMU guys that they shouldn't be there, and they left the field. No swords drawn, no push the play-army guy over your SMU buddy, none of that. Admittedly he was a much more imposing figure than the nimrod from the video. I've no doubt SMU cheerleaders knew exactly what they were doing in the same way that the Rice M.O.B. knew what they were doing when they'd incite a riot. SWC was fun.
