For what reason does the corps exist?

Originally, to prepare the student body-at-large for possible military service. Sort of like VMI or The Citadel.

Nowadays, A&M has a much broader focus as a school than it used to (as well as female students) and participation (as well as the actual ROTC aspects) are optional. Students are welcome to join, participate and make of their training what they will.

You didn't answer the question.

I didn't ask you why A&M exists.

Well, it's not "sort of" like VMI or The Citadel. It is exactly like VMI or The Citadel in 2015. How is it being optional a slight against those who choose to join? Honestly, I don't get this.
