WTF? Damn, a lot of horrible information in this thread. YOU CANNOT STRENGTHEN AN ACL. It is a ligament NOT a muscle. It is very tiny compared to your overall knee. The ACL is very fragile and any quick change in movement, jumping and landing the wrong way, stopping and starting, etc., will tear it. No amount of conditioning can prevent a tear. You cannot weight train an ACL. Now, I do think the way you run has an effect. If you slash a lot of side to side juking, that puts more pressure but a bad hit in the right spot will take any knee out. Woman's ACL is even smaller and is very susceptible to injury.
The more muscle and weight you put on probably increases your chances of a tear. Look at the NFL, most ACL tears this year were non contact. None was a result of strength or conditioning.

This. There isn't anything you can do to strengthen a ligament.
