As much as I hate to insult Spurrier by the comparison, this reminds me of Terry Bowden at Auburn. Midway through the season he wanted to be assured he was coming back the next year, and the AD told him that they would evaluate after the season was over. That wasn't good enough so Bowden quit and walked right then and there.

If Spurrier was going out on his own terms, he wouldn't have started by saying he's resigning and not retiring.

That's what someone says when their boss tells them they can either resign or get fired.
