That is a true assessment and definitely how Sumlin has recruited in the past. I actually joined this board to slam Sumlin's recruiting tactics or lack thereof.
I've backed off of bashing Sumlin, because I finally saw him bring in JUCOs last year instead of leaving tons of extra roster room. This class along with the addition of Kirk Merritt has been looking pretty good too.

had a conversation with a Texas High School head coach last night who every year has D1 guys being signed. I asked him about A&M and how they recruit. His response was not what I wanted to hear but it was his opinion.
He said in his opinion Sumlin and his coaches are not respectful of the high school coaches. All the other coaches will call and make an appointment to come visit on campus, but A&M just shows up and sort of expects the coach to drop everything. He also said Sumlin doesn't come to games like the other coaches. I asked him who in his opinion was the best -and he didn't hesitate - Coach O. Said he calls ahead and set up a visit time, calls all the time and asks how he can help the high school coaches and their staff. He builds real relationships with the coaches. Sumlin just seems to act like he's above it all. One coaches opinion. I'm sure there might be others who have different opinions.

Not coaching the offense and not coaching the defense doesn't really leave Sumlin much time to focus on recruiting the way we'd like, so I can see why he cuts corners here and there

he meant frequency. Of course he has style when he does show up.

Charlie was also known to have a better relationship with coaches and look where it got him.
Eventually just offering a stable situation is beneficial, which is why we are suddenly doing better in recruiting.
High school coaches aren't the power brokers they were 20 years ago. I can see why Sumlin wants to go around them and get to the real handlers.

Sounds like many of those empty complaints I hear about in the south when they believe they have lost some authority to somebody they didn't want to answer to...just saying...

I mean't like ... "he doesn't come to games like other coaches" like he thinks sumlin only comes when he can make a show out of it, and it's disrespectful and arrogant to only show up to a few a year and in a very upstaging sort of way?

Sumlin and the coaching staff explained their busy schedule on a good segment earlier this year.
People need to remember that A&M is not in the Big 12. We are not a local team playing games in state.
Instead of all this "weak arse" hearsay, why don't you just listen to what the staff is doing in their own words...
The discussion starts at the 28:30 mark (LINK )
--Discusses people upset about transfers, but don't talk about the kids that leave other programs to come to A&M (Knight, Ford, and Trayveon Williams...)
--They recruit off evaluations and not Star Rankings (Trayveon, Prater, and McCoy...)
--They have put in a system and Sumlin only goes to games on Thursday, because they need to be with team on Fridays. This is because they are not in the Big 12 anymore. They have to travel to Dallas or OOS (every game is east of here...)
--Other Coaches are driving on Thursday or Friday morning. Friday night they often have to use a private plane now because they have to get to Oxford, MS and Columbia, SC too and then rush back to current job.
--Focus seems to be on prospect and parents..not coach
-- Sumlin discusses the differences between Red River Rivalry (Big 12 recruiting)when he was at OU vs. Neutral site recruiting in the SEC.
--One phone call a week in SEC, but you can text. Prospect can call as much as they want.

Trayveon wasn't a transfer, did you mean Tra Carson or Brandon Williams?

Maybe he meant both of them.

Left us out of his top 3 so I'm assuming he isn't coming in for an OV anymore.

They were all right, A&M has left the state of Texas.

This was absolutely not the case a couple years ago, I saw ranking chasing and star watching to the detriment of scheme fit etc. The sad thing is, this shouldn't even have to be said, but early Sumlin and late Mack Brown show it happens.

Excuses. If Baker Mayfield and Trevor Knight had transferred, or if that had ever happened before anywhere, maybe he's got an argument. Also, Trayveon isn't a transfer.

I believe he included "flips/decommits" from other schools in the context of transfers. Williams was a TCU commit that the staff flipped.
