The University of Alabama is in the process of contacting its men's basketball season ticket holders about significant changes in the seating configuration at Coleman Coliseum for the upcoming season.

The changes are primarily designed to bring Alabama students closer to the floor. In recent seasons, UA most UA student seating has been placed behind the basket nearest to the visiting team bench in Sections V, W and X. The new plan would move the student section across from the visiting bench into Sections R and S, continuing into Sections T, U and V.

Even before new head coach Avery Johnson was hired last spring, UA director of athletics Bill Battle was committed to a study comparing the fan experience and atmosphere in Coleman Coliseum to other arenas both in the SEC and nationally. Johnson has been a strong advocate of such changes since his hiring, promising "exciting new things" in such areas as student seating.

ETA: Seating chart for reference

Not sure it is much better.

It's a start, but still needs to get better.

What would be better? Putting it behind the benches? I'm just glad they're finally getting the students out from behind the goal and behind a bunch of GA seats.

I actually just now looked at a seating chart (added to OP).. I'm not sure it is better. I'd really like to see them give the entire Q R and S sections (without the shooter club and rebounder club there) to the students.

I assumed the OP chart was the old seating arrangement (since I can't tell any difference between it and last years seats)

Due to the restructuring of the student section, network television cameras will move to the North side of Coleman Coliseum in order to shoot into the student section. As a result, the Coleman Coliseum floor will be repainted.

I'm thinking a combo of houndstooth and plaid.

All they are changing is which sections the student section is..
Old Student Section: V, W, X
New Student Section R, S, T, U, V

I wish that was the student section for gymnastics. I know NO one cares but me, but I went to our meet against Georgia and they push all their students together so its 1,000 UGA students by the floor. OUR current student section has about 100 or so by the floor with everyone else shoved in the nosebleed. We have about 2,000 students show up to most gym meets and if they were all in W and X it would emulate the student endzone of BDS on a Saturday.

BOL says the students will have rows 1-32 of R & S. So I'd say it is an improvement. And they are also apparently open to giving students more prime seating assuming it works out this year.

Just put them behind the opposing bench and get it over with, sheesh. You want them to come support the sport, but put them in the shittiest section while everywhere else is pretty much empty. Take care of the students and the will support.

I don't think the student section is allowed to be behind the opposing bench.

Bryant is right, you definitely aren't allowed to have the students behind the visitors bench.. Maybe not even the home bench.

should this go well, the expectation is that they will continue to move more students court side.

Unless we're moved to the Bottom of S, T-X is the same exact location. It's still pretty high up.

We need to be in X-C and those club seats if we want to be effective.

You can't be in X-C, that's behind the visitors bench.

And as mentioned earlier, it is the bottom of row S, rows 1-32. And also rows 1-32 in R, which kicks out the Rebounder Club.

Playing in Bham: Check
Moving Student Section: Check

I like that they are at least trying to shake things up and energize the program. That was the complaint many of us had back in the Winter.

I'm just excited for Bama basketball. If we can have a magical season and make a unexpected run to the sweet 16 I will be so happy. Couple that with snagging some of the top in state talent and we will be good for a while.
