27 yo so he should be able to discern -- stay away from Berkley at all costs

If he's 27 can't he kinda figure it out on his own?
Sure he can. I just want to learn as much as I can and offer advice if he asks for it. He has kinda sorta nixed UCLA not because of the school but because of LA. We'll see. For the poster that mentioned USC - despite the name it's a private school. ~$49K tuition alone for 2 semesters. Compared to UCLA and other state schools at ~$13K (which will be waived, but it wouldn't be at USC).

That's a good one, thanks. We're pretty far past the point of me "making" him do anything, but I can still knock him on the head.

Does he want a career as a tenure-track professor?
Or perhaps he would like to be a novelist/playwright/etc?

I'm sure he hasn't narrowed it down that much and chose English for the same sorts of reasons his father chose engineering (good at math and lots of possibilities vs. good at English/comp and lots of possibilities). At one time he wanted to be a lawyer but I think that has passed. I can't see him teaching at any level.

UCLA he can graduate and go write mindless sitcoms to make his daddy proud

Besides teaching, what possibilities could an English major get you? Seems like a waste of a degree imo

I didn't even finish college and I have my own business, so suck it

Ucla or Berkeley would be my choices. Just don't let him go to Davis. Nobody wants to be landlocked there.

This is the reason I would go with UC Irvine over UCLA. Orange county is a lot different than LA.
Irvine city

Jesus. If a 27-year-old man can't think for himself, no college in the world is gonna help him.

I think if he is going to school for an English degree and he is stuck on going to a UC, he should go to Davis. It is probably the cheapest option in terms of cost of living. I would not call Davis "remote." It is 15 minutes outside of Sacramento, which I guess is a smaller city in California (~500k in city and ~2.1 million metro).
I went to UCSD, which is not one of his options, so I don't have strong feelings about these other schools. However, my sister went to UCD for undergrad and eventually med school and I always enjoyed visiting her for Picnic day. Overall, I think that he will receive a great education and have a good time wherever he chooses to go.

Yeah, you're totally right - I had not looked at a map in a while!
My memories of Davis were driving/dining through there on the way to Tahoe - it's 2hrs (I think Google is being generous here) from towns on the Peninsula.
Sacramento seemed like it was in another state.

Make sure that he knows not to have sex with another college student. The risks are too great (affirmative consent).
Berkeley is full of bat-shite crazy SJWs. I think I would punch a random moron every day if I had to visit that campus.
