Didn't bama lose to mighty Louisiana- Monroe that year?

Yes they did. So what. Most great coaches struggle in their first year. There's a huge difference between teams struggling in a coach's first year compared to their second year. Most great coaches at a top school turn the program around and win big by their second year. Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer all won national championships in their second year. Pete Carroll took USC to a major bowl game and a top 5 finish in his second year. Saban won the SEC at LSU and went 12-2 at Bama in his second season. By their second season, a coach has had two full off-seasons to coach up his players and improve them. Unless the school's been riddled with sanctions or is just a lesser program in general like a Vanderbilt, a top coach don't need more time than that to drastically improve the fortunes of a football program.

The coaching changes caused roster attrition at Tennessee that turned out to be very much like sanctions. Not to mention Dooley.

Doesn't*

If you expect any team that travels to #4 Oklahoma for their first away game with a team full of freshmen, and an O-line with zero experience and expect them to win, then I don't know what to tell you.
