Define relevant. We were pretty good in the 70's and 80's under Newton and Sanderson...Bobby Knight said our '76 team was the best team he'd ever coached against. Newton won 3 straight SEC Championships. Wimp won 4 SEC Tournaments, 1 regular season SEC Championship and took us to 5 Sweet 16s. Not elite, but relevant...
Gottfried took us to one Elite 8, which was nice, and one regular season SEC title, but not much else. He did not leave us for NC State; he was fired after a couple of subpar seasons and was a broadcaster for a few years before being hired by NCS. Sanderson and Newton had much better resumes while at Bama...
