I don't think that's necessarily true. If you have a good coach who can sell himself as being able to build a successful program - combined with a strong history, you're in good shape.
The know individual player, but could care less about history of a program (except for the Big 3 already listed). Just like the NBA, Teens root for Star more than for the uniforms they play for.

I think the SEC as a whole got apathetic about basketball in the last 30 years combined.
SEC has the "nice places to live and play" down pat, but its not like climate and warm weather is everything since basketball is played inside.
Clearly AU currently has the right guy. With the exception of Pearl, Calapari and Donnavan the SEC has literally ZERO of those attributes you describe. I think Tyndall could be fine long term at UT, but we will see if he survives NCAA and can prove he can recruit.
The perception is the elite, Team USA Olympic coaches all are in the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and ex Big East schools. If it isn't UK, the blue chippers nationwide and in the South are heading to the blue bloods.

The only schools that can 'sell' their history to recruits are UCLA, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, UNC, and Duke (maybe Syracuse?).
If there's a recruit who wants to stay close to home, but may not have an offer from a school like the ones you listed - a school being able to point to their being among the tops in the conference in all time wins, championships, and tournament appearances could be an important factor.

On a side note, I think CDT did well in his first year, especially considering how the transition went down from CCM to CDT. My gut says he won't be punished by the NCAA.

And that is why the SEC has suffered in Basketball the last decade.

I completely agree, but it's assuming the factors of the coaches, current players, facilities, and current success are equal. In other terms, I believe the factors I just listed come before the program's history...especially at non-traditional basketball schools.

And why the SEC as a whole has to bring in more superstar coaching characters to the equation. Howland to Alabama would be a good start.
Posted on 3/15/15 at 8:21 pm to psk_Vol
Bama would be fools not to hire Howland. It's the most realistic proven candidate that probably wants back into coaching. he has national connections, which is over half the battle in basketball
Otherwise, you roll the dice on a mid-major coach who could be a bust. Just a hit and miss route that you should only take if there's not a guy Howland right there for the taking
If Bill Battle is as much of a wildcard as some Bama fans have alluded to, I wouldn't blink if he want the quick and easy route and hire a guy like Pastner. Pastner is looking to jump ship before Memphis cans him. If/when he's fired, I'd like Jones to make him an assistant when Eric Musselman makes the inevitable jump back to the NBA

What Tyndall did this year with our rag-tag roster left by the malpractice of recruiting that was Cuonzo Martin is nothing short of incredible. From an X and O standpoint I could not be happier with how Tyndall had our team prepared.
We just have to get this NCAA crap behind us so we can start recruiting elite talent again. When the news initially broke we had a Top 50 PF decommit and recruiting has been slow ever since. CDT needs to get the greenlight so he can get us off the ground recruiting wise. If that can happen I think Tennessee basketball will be in good hands and be a consistent participant in the dance which is all I expect of the program.
The thing is who knows with how the NCAA will handle this. As we know firsthand with CBP, the NCAA brand of justice is determined by spinning a wheel.
Hopefully they won't screw CDT, but who knows, we have never been a sacred cow to the NCAA. Hell they gave Bruce Pearl a longer ban for lying about having junior recruits over at his house for a BBQ (which is now deemed legal) than Penn State did for covering up decades of mass child rapes so their football program wouldn't look bad.

UNC exploiting decades of academic fraud for athletes got a slap on the wrist from the NCAA.
Boheim got a lot of wins vacated, but he is only serving 9 games next year for close to a decade of "cheating".
Bruce Pearl got a three year ban for lying about a ticky-tack ridiculous rule that no longer exists and gave us no real advantage whatsoever. Not to mention he got an 8 game SEC suspension before the NCAA decided to blacklist him.
The whole Pearl/NCAA thing at Tennessee was one of the most shining examples of the NCAA not treating everyone fairly when it comes to infractions. I'm sure CDT will get a 10 year show cause knowing our luck with the NCAA.

Dude just stop. AU bball with or without Pearl will always be a joke. UA's program is so much better and it's not even an argument.

Great post and I completely agree. My only worry is I am not sure Bill Battle is the guy to make the right hire, hope he proves me wrong.
I hope he calls around and gets some great input from some folks, AND opens up the wallet on a proven coach and recruiter - with exciting gameplay for the fans.

It is truly shocking that a rarely good post on tRant has largly devolved in to crap because AU fans are so upset that he made a very minor slight at their basketball program. Everything here doesn't have to be a pissing contest.

Nation wasn't laughing this week. A lot of high praise for a 15-20 Team. Wait till Pearl gets things going.

That's what happens when you're the measuring stick.
Everything turns into a pissing contest, because that's all we are to them. A measuring stick that they hate.

A pissing measuring stick. Ok, I will buy that is what most AU Fans think of Bama.

Case in point.
The only thing missing from this thread is auburnphan to tell us how we invented championships back in the 1980s and paid players as far back as the 1930s.

We have a muchhhhh better facility and last I heard we weren't frugal on our last coaching hire
You might have a bigger basketball fanbase but that's because you have the bandwagoners that jumped on your football program
We consistently filled our arena this year
