We stayed near Sugar so we didn't make it to Blowing Rock except on the drive home. We'll definitely take a day to go there next year though.
There's a new brew house at the entrance to sugar called High Country something house. It's on Facebook. The owner was super cool. She only has local draft beer. Stop in the next time you are there.

I went to the Mizzou game in Knoxville this year and had a great experience. Probably the friendliest people of any city I have been to. I wanted to visit Sevierville and other cities out that way, (and on to Asheville) but didn't have the time!
Glad you enjoyed it. I recommend next time try to get a cabin or something in the Smokies a day or two before or after the game.

The beer store in Boone was pretty good too. Can't remember the name. You've probably been there. The campus was small but I liked it a lot. What a great spot for the stadium.
I wouldn't mind my son going there one day.
<---------------
Would have an excuse to build a cabin.

Thanks Uncle Tupelo! I've actually driven the 30-A from south of Tallahassee to Pensacola. Apalachicola was really cool. Spent a couple of nights in Pensacola. Their downtown was really nice. Liked the ballpark there too. To bad it wasn't baseball season. Destin was great too btw.

Port St Joe, that's really close to Apalachicola, is my favorite beach spot on the gulf simply because it's a very blue collar, old fashioned southern coastal town without all the high rises, 5 star golf resorts, fruffy shops, uptight asshats in fancy cars you get farther west. Beaches are beautiful, not too full and the skyline not littered with ugly high rise condos.
That you mention this makes me think a lot of the more ritzy tourist first places aren't exactly the main thing you're looking for.
I actually don't have a lot of suggestions but would be interested in reading some other replies.
1) I've always been interested in making the trip from Tuscaloosa south into the black belt along the smaller county roads through Faunsdale south to the Alabama River (Miller's Ferry, Gee's Bend etc etc).
2) Also would like to go to Muscle Shoals AL mainly because of the historic rock/country music recording studios and not sure how the area is though I hear it's pretty beautiful.

Peabody's on 105 and Glug on King's Street.
Only if you don't mind him becoming a massive stoner like 90% of my fellow students there.

That's it.
He'd only go that far from home IF a scholarship for sports was involved and unless his handicap comes way down, he'll be staying here in the sunshine state.
Love your stadium setting. That was awesome.
Where's the good eats in Boone? We at the Messican place in that strip center and the food was cheap and the waiter was funny but it's wasn't all that great tasting.

Also Cleveland, Tennessee in June/July... The town is pretty meh. But in the summer, the town is infested with river hippies that know how to have a good time.
The Ocoee River has some great class III and IV whitewater that makes the Niangua River look like my old man taking a leak.
In between float trips, head over the Hiwassee River for a little fishing excursion.
At night, asks the hippies where a place called Duff's is... Great music, $2 drafts served in a ball jar... Very southern appalachian. You'll love it.

Bardstown - My Old Kentucky Home; America's most beautiful small town
Hodgenville - birthplace of Abraham Lincoln
Bowling Green - if you like Corvettes
Ft. Knox - if you like gold
Petersburg - if you think humans walked with dinosaurs

Daniel Boone Inn, Macadoos, Boone Bagelry, Black Cat, The Parthenon (I think, some Greek name. Been a while), a nice Thai place I can't recall the name of, Comeback Shack for a damn tasty burger, Capone's Pizza...there's a lot for such a small town.
FWIW, even OOS tuition is dirt cheap. It cost about 23k a year when I went, and about 12k for in-state students. It isn't exactly an outstanding academic institution, so a scholarship shouldn't be hard (I would have gotten one, but I transferred from Bama).
