If Florida qualifies, and we're talking only large cities in the south, then that narrows it down to a competition between Atlanta, New Orleans, and Miami. Everything else isn't big enough to qualify in the large category.

I Got offered meth, heroin, and pills in Atlanta. I never got offered that in NO.

you must have a strange definition of "the south" or "big".

Love NOLA but Atlanta is the correct answer

New Orleans by a lot
It has the most character of any big city in the US.
Every time I go to Atlanta, I wonder why I did. It has nothing every other nouveau southern city doesn't have. Except Jacksonville, Charlotte, Nashville, etc are just more enjoyable places to be. All fairly generic compared to New Orleans.

Well New Orleans isn't large, it just feels like a large city because there's always thousands of tourists in town, no matter what time of year. Plus, it always has conventions and year round attractions going on.
Atlanta and Miami are in large metro areas and very spread out unlike N.O. I can't speak for Miami, but there's nothing in Atlanta that can be compared to the French Quarter and it doesn't have the restaurant recognition or fame that N.O. has around the world.
This is not a good comparison. Atlanta compares more to Dallas or Houston. There's nothing to compare to New Orleans.
Eta: Raleigh NC is a nice city that would beat some of the other towns listed in this thread.

Both suck. The best large city in the South is Nashville with Charlotte in second. The best smaller city in the South is Charleston with Chattanooga in second.
Just wow. Don't get around much or just like chain restaurants and chain culture?
ETA - Didn't see charleston there. I exempt them from my post above and agree. But Charlotte is unforgivable. At least Nashville has a somewhat native culture.

Why do people compare Atlanta and New Orleans to begin with! New Orleans isn't on the same level as Atlanta in terms of economic importance. It's like comparing Baltimore to Philly or New York.

For food and entertainment and music...New Orleans is hands down best. Dirty city though and no Gulf of Mexico next to it....Atlanta proper other than Buckhead is a warzone....the suburbs are ok...Dunwoody and outskirts cool.

Buckhead is nice but the rest of Atlanta is bad IMO
New Orleans has higher crime but is more unique IMO

you must not know much about Nashville. Can't speak for Charlotte. And Chattanooga is awesome.

Are you kidding me? You guys kill me with this crap. I've worked/lived/hung out in Atlanta for a long time, and very rarely, if ever, have I felt unsafe. Where do you guys get these opinions?

This. I've lived in on Ponce, in Atlantic Station, and now in Decatur. None of those are in Buckhead. I've never even witnessed a crime. I've walked around in the middle of the night and never felt unsafe. I don't know where people get that shite from.
I mean, yeah, if you stray into Bankhead or some place like that you'll be in a warzone... but really? Only Buckhead isn't a warzone?
There are some damn expensive neighborhoods in Atlanta outside of Buckhead. I guess all of those very wealthy people have no idea that they live in a warzone.

No kidding. It's sad, but I think some people just live in rural areas and are terrified of cities.....or more specifically, black people.
Posted on 12/30/14 at 9:36 am to RedPants
Louisiana has just as many blacks (if not more) in the rural areas as they do in the city. Country blacks are just very different (culturally) from city blacks. The issue isn't race, it's culture. There are a lot of TPOS white people in cities and rural areas as well.
