Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day (about D-Day) and A Bridge Too Far (about Operation Market Garden). Both are classics and were made into pretty good movies.

You beat me to those ... I've read them both a couple of times. Most U.S. paratroopers have at one time or another either while bored in garrison or bored in the field.

Jumpin' Jim Gavin actually pinned my ARCOM on me when I was Trooper of the Year ... I was told it was his last visit ever to Bragg.

If the Pacific naval war interests you, anything by James Hornfischer. also, it is technical, but Shattered Sword is the best book ever written about the battle of Midway.

I'm a graduate student in American history, and one of the better books I've read since beginning my program is John Dower's War Without Mercy: Race and Power in the Pacific War. Really cool look at why the Pacific Theater was so much more violent than the European theater by analyzing how the Americans viewed the Japanese and how the Japanese viewed the West. Great read!

The only person who could read more than 3 or 4 pages of this crap was Hitler. A Guiness Book record holder for "most purchased, least read."

That is a great read and he has an awesome last name.

I doubt we ever see an Ace again unless a drone counts.

Not WWII but The Passing of the Night by Col. Robinson Risner is an awesome read about Vietnam. The book's sub title is My Seven Years in the Hanoi Hilton
