Something that has not been spoken about, but when UAB was still in its infancy trying to build a fanbase and only drawing 20,000 fans this was their schedule in 2002, look at the home opponents:
.08/31/02 at Florida TV Gainesville, Fla. L, 51-3
09/07/02 vs. Troy St TV Birmingham, Ala. W, 27-26
09/14/02 vs. Pittsburgh TV Birmingham, Ala. L, 26-20
09/21/02 at Louisiana-Lafayette Lafayette, La. L, 34-0
09/28/02 vs. Memphis * TV Birmingham, Ala. W, 31-17
10/12/02 vs. Houston * TV Birmingham, Ala. W, 51-34
10/19/02 at Tulane * TV New Orleans, La. L, 35-14
10/26/02 at Army * TV West Point, NY W, 29-26
11/09/02 vs. Southern Miss * TV Birmingham, Ala. L, 20-13
11/16/02 vs. East Carolina * TV Birmingham, Ala. W, 36-29
11/23/02 at Louisville * TV Louisville, KY L, 41-21
11/30/02 at Cincinnati * TV Cincinnati, Ohio L, 31-23
If they still had home games against teams like, Pitt, Houston,East carolina, etc those numbers this year would be much more than 20,000 plus. I guess what I am trying to say is the numbers of fans attending games in 2014 against leser team is the same as it was in 2003 it seems like fan interest has grown. How many more thousands would have shown up with that 2003 home schedule this year?
