BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
A Birmingham lawmaker is again trying to split UAB off from the University of Alabama Board of Trustees. Rep. John Rogers says he is pushing a series of bills designed to give UAB more autonomy from the trustees. Rogers has one bill to separate UAB and UAH from the UA system.
Rogers, who is a UAB employee, says the board has stifled the growth of the two campuses in Birmingham and Huntsville. Rogers points the board refusing to consider an on-campus stadium for UAB and the killing of the popular hockey program at UAH.
"The board of trustees seem to be geared toward one place. Taking care of one place. Taking care of everybody in Tuscaloosa. Taking care of the University of Alabama. Taking care of Tuscaloosa or UAT. What about UAB, UAH," Rogers said.
Rogers says students at UAB who fought for the stadium have increased the sentiment to move away from the UA system. In past Rogers' efforts to break off from the board of trustees have failed.

You are literally quoting Auburn conspiracy theorists who called Bama UAT
Bear Jr is correct. UAB probably shouldn't have an athletics Dept. Because it doesn't make money.
Sorry that bothers you.

Andrew Vines, student representative for Free UAB, said that equal treatment of UAB from the University of Alabama trustees is far reaching outside of the stadium issue.
“The trustees in here, they are the guys that pull all of the strings as far as funding goes,”
he said. “That’s funding for your major, funding for student life, funding for the Greek system. So really it touches every single part of your school.”

I’ll tell you what’s going on here: The University of Alabama system Board of Trustees is afraid the Birmingham school will one day compete with the Tuscaloosa school in football and it’s doing whatever it can to make sure that never happens.
Of the Board’s 15 members, 11 of them have some kind of degree from the Tuscaloosa campus while just two have a degree from the Birmingham campus.
One of those with a degree from UAT is none other than Bear Bryant’s son, Paul Bryant, Jr. Remember, Bear was on record having said he didn’t even think UAB should have an athletic department, let alone a football team.
I'm sorry, are you insinuating that the University of Alabama BOT should have a 50/50 split? And which distinguished UAB alums would have sitting on the BOT? You realize UAB wasn't even ESTABLISHED AS AN AUTONOMOUS UNIT until 1969, right?
And Bryant is right. The UA System shouldn't support UAB Athletics while UAB does nothing to support itself. UAB should form a Foundation and support themselves like USA, Troy, Georgia Southern, etc do. Now they have and they can raise money like every other school in America has to instead of sucking at the UABOT teet.

Yea, the UABOT should be in the business of subsidizing revitilization of Midtown Birmingham for a football program that has no donations and no attendance. That makes total sense. Please, keep posting these.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees was supposed to consider the issue of the stadium in their open and public meeting this week. However, earlier in the week a statement came out that said the Trustees would not consider the project. This came as a shock to just about everyone involved, including some of the Trustees. In effect, a few people killed the project from behind closed doors. There is plenty of detail about what has gone on in other places and I don’t claim any of it is true but things seem very clear. The short version of the story goes like this. Paul Bryant Jr. does not want UAB to have a successful football team because his father, Paul “Bear” Bryant, former Alabama head coach and god to rednecks everywhere, did not want UAB to have a football team. The theory goes that if UAB has a good team it could make recruiting more difficult for the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa (UAT). This idea, of course, is bullshite, but that is a debate for another time. Junior just happens to be the President of the Board of Trustees that governs both UAB and UAT (and the University of Alabama at Huntsville as well). This means Junior has a certain amount of power and he isn’t afraid to use it. His meddling in the affairs and success of UAB is legendary if not criminal. It is suspected he killed the OCS project through force of will.

University of Alabama trustees pull a fast one on UAB football again

In mid-September, at its last meeting, the board let UAB get its hopes up about building an on-campus stadium. How did the board reward the good-faith effort of AD Brian Mackin and his team to present a workable proposal? On the first day of November, it crushed UAB's hopes and didn't even wait until this week's actual board meeting to do it.
What changed in the interim? High-ranking UAB officials and supporters were asking that question Tuesday. They were angry at what the trustees did and how they did it.
Instead of debating the pros and cons of the project in an open meeting, as governmental bodies should do, the trustees dismissed the whole thing in an arrogant and condescending statement.
They shut it down without voting it down.

The first sentence of Tuesday's official statement from the board reads, "A majority of the Board believes that an on-campus football stadium is not in the best interest of UAB, the University System or the state."
Wait. What? An on-campus stadium is not in the best interest of UAB? Seriously? Whoever authored that piece of fiction should be forced to take a few cold showers in the UAB locker room at Legion Field.
And how does the board know what a majority believes? Did it take a vote? Not in public. If the trustees took a private vote on the appropriation of funds, wouldn't that be a violation of the Alabama Open Meetings Act?
