did not read entire thread but when we play the great defenses we will have to be able to stretch the field vertically and Sims does not do that.
Coker will have to be the one. If we cant stretch it vertically then UF will put so many in the box that even the running game wont get untracked

Sims looked very poised in the pocket and seemed to make good decisions. The game didn't appear to be too fast for him. He will gain confidence and make the deep throws. I think he is our QB this year.

its his first start no matter how many years he has been in the program. This one game sold me on Kiffin with what he has done with Sims at qb. He spun out of multiple sacks extended the play and kept his eyes downfield. A couple of runs when he was getting a little rattled but all in all I was happy with his play today.

God I am going to have to stay off of this board.
You people are absolutely ridiculous with this shite. Sims played a good game and yall are still ready to move on to someone else. It's embarrassing.
When the SEC rant, who largely hates Bama, is impressed by Sims, and the Bama board is not content with his play, there is a problem.

No one is ready to move on. Sims did ok, but do you think Florida and LSU will give him those gimme throws all game? The goal is championship. No one is saying he can't do it because he hasn't taken the shots other than an average throw to Jones which was dropped, but it's completely unfair to base his deep ball on one throw. Most people just want to see him do it.
We have THE best deep threat in CFB. It's a monumental waste of ability if we don't consistently throw it to him down the field. We're gonna dink and dunk with Kiffin's WCO, but Kiffin also likes to take some shots, and with Cooper you have to.
I've noticed some people are just too damn sensitive. Be a little critical of guys like Sims and Cyrus Jones and it gets blown out of proportion. Sims had a good game. No one is denying that. he had almost 300 yards of offense in his first start. But there is certainly reason to wonder if he can take the next step. CFB has changed in such a short time. You can't win the title with another GMAC.
Sims gives us something else though. No one prepares for a running QB when they play Bama. When Sims extended plays, guys got open and he kept his eyes down field and made the throw. That's a HUGE addition to the offense.

Do you really think Sims was given carte blanche to call his own plays? Really? In his first start?

Let's talk about this word "stretch" for a moment.
I've seen the phrases "stretch the field" and "stretch the pocket" used in this thread.
Seems like we have to pick one. Do you want a guy who can stretch the field or the pocket? Because realistically, you can't have both.
Could McCarron stretch the field? Sure. Could he stretch the pocket? Hell no. McCarron had 387 yards passing against Oklahoma. He also lost about 50 yards on seven sacks and gave up a touchdown on a fumble return. Are sacks always the QBs fault? No, but that's irrelevant in this discussion. The point is, how well can the QB escape and then make a sound decision when he's running for his life.
The bottom line is that Sims is what he is. The reality is that he probably isn't going to get much better, and, let's face it...maybe Coker won't either. I wished for three years that we had a kicker that could make a clutch field goal from distance with the game on the line, and we didn't get one of those until just now. So really, there's lots to be positive about.
But our CB play sure as hell isn't one of them.

Um...yeah...yeah you can.
Stretching the pocket only needs to happen when he has to. When pressure comes, Sims will do a great job at dodging it. He looked great yesterday.
But stretching the field is something that needs to be a consistent threat if we're gonna compete for a title. But no one is saying Sims can't do it, just that we need to see it.

So, with more experience, you think he is just going not gain anything? Hell, I think that a lot of his battle was nervousness and pressure to not screw up. With two cupcakes coming up, and the weight of his first big start off of his shoulders, I look for him to only get better.

Name a few. Manziel? Cam Newton? You're talking about extremely rare individuals. There are extremely few of those guys walking around. Expecting to have one from year to year isn't realistic.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. I can't make sense out of the nonsense that you're posting.

In arm strength? No. Experience won't give him more arm strength. Experience will help him avoid running the play clock down and burning timeouts. Experience will help him to improve at decision making under pressure...which he already did a damn good job at last night.
But no...more experience is not going to give him the type of arm that everyone seems to wish he had.

Those guys, Manziel, and Newton are the guys who came to mind first. It isn't that rare. Unrealistic to expect it? Maybe, but that wasn't the point. There are always a solid number of guys who can do it int eh power 5 conferences, and a few outside of the power 5.

I'm saying he can't do it...at least not yet. If he could do it, we would have seen it...last night, in any previous A-Day game, even in mop-up duty in past years (even GMac did that).
The fact that we haven't seen it tells me that he can't. I'm not worried about it, though, because I'm confident that this staff, with this roster, can develop game plans that will win.
The problem will be that we will have difficulty if we get into a shootout...with a team like aTm (again) that requires us to have to throw the ball all over the field. It's going to have to be on our defense to make sure that we don't get into that situation.

Again, look at the list. 3 Heisman winners. You're talking about rare players.

I'm not going to argue over it.

Me either. I'd love to see us get one of those guys. Part of me thinks they aren't attracted to our offensive system where there's gonna be two 1,000 yard running backs.
I think we'll be fine offensively, as long as our defense doesn't put us in big holes.

I'm excited to see the Cornwell/Barnett battle.

His arm strength looked fine to me. I look for him to only become more accurate.
