Spinoff thread: How did Stoops earn the name "Big Game Bob"?

Okay I'm 20, but I wasn't really fully aware and followed THE REST of college football like I do now until about 2003-2004.
Like the title says, how did he get that name? He won the title in his second season as a head coach, of course. But coaches before him have done the same way before he did. After that victory against FSU, his record is downright awful in "big games"
Notable Games:
2003 Big 12 Title Game vs. KSU and Bill Snyder - Destroyed by 4 TDs before facing....another big game.
2004 NCG vs. LSU - Promptly put away, Nick Saban style, in first NCG loss
2005 NCG vs. USC Trojans - Another massive embarrassment, this time at the hands of Pete Carroll and his two Heisman trophy winners. Went in dry to the tune of 55-19 I believe? Will stand as one of the worst title game losses for the next 7 years.
2009 NCG vs. tGOAT Florida Gators - Oklahoma's offense was touted as the most prolific of all time going into that game, averaging 60+ points a contest. Held to just 14 in the title.
2007 Fiesta vs. BSU - Statue of Liberty. Nuff said.
2008 Fiesta Vs. WVU - This is the weirdest one to me
The late Bill Stewart totally dismantled another superior Oklahoma team (overall, WVU had that ridiculous trio on offense)
So now we get to the 2014 Sugar Bowl and he finally just takes it to the other team and beats Alabama in nearly every facet of the game.
IMO, they should change his nickname to "Wins something special every now and then Bob"

maybe it was sarcasm

It started off because he owned Texas early in his career, and at that point the RRS is basically what Bama-LSU is now. It then became sarcastic over time

Please don't ever be this dumb again

I figured as such, but it just makes me wonder why ESPN still uses it

^ That
There was one month, I wanna say October, the year they won the national title. They played three high ranked teams an absolutely smashed them all
10/7/00: vs. #11 Texas, 63-14
10/14/00 @ #2 Kansas St, 41-31
10/28/00 vs. #1 Nebraska, 31-14

Alabama didn't really want to be there. They played half a team.

The nickname was created by Robert Horry and mistakenly applied to Stoops after one anomaly season.

it's been sarcasm the past 10 years or so because he lost 5 BCS bowl games in a row over a 6 year span. imo it's kind of disingenuous at this point, though. in his career now, he's 5-5 overall in BCS bowl games. First, that's a shite ton of BCS appearances, likely more than anyone in college football, although i'm not 100% on that. winning half your BCS games isn't bad at all either. guy took it on the chin in big games for a while, but he's still one of the best out there imo.

Yeah I dunno. My OU friends were even using it sarcastically for a while, though they've been heavy on the kool aid this offseason post Sugar Bowl. He did win like his first 5 RRS games when they were all top 10 matchups and a play in for the Big 12 Championship. I think the 63-14 and 65-13 games were what really inspired it

That's bullshite and you know it. The Sooners were just better prepared in that game and it showed.

3 in a row.

Yeah I forgot they had that stretch in 2000 also. That team was really fricking good. Not a ton of NFL stars, Roy Williams is the only one that comes to mind off the top of my head, but a bunch of really really good college players like Rocky Calmus, JT Thatcher, Heupel, Quentin Griffin.

please. There have been teams just as "down" over missing out on the title game play in that game and do fine:
Auburn 2004
Georgia 2007
Florida 2009

In fact, after we went up by 7 late in the Iron Bowl, we decided we had it won and lost interest after that point. We really won the game and then handed it over out of boredom.
I hate it when we beat ourselves.
