It seems he had this even when he was younger. Does anyone know the origin?

He gave it to himself I think.

Spurrier likes to refer to himself in the 3rd person from time to time.

Only douchebags give themselves nicknames.
It fits now though because he's a bitter old curmudgeon.

Welp, he was a ball coach. Then he got old.

Using the term Ole is common for baby boomer (and above) men in E. TN. Both Ole Dad and Ole Ball Coach are things you'll hear (even before they ever got old they'd use it). In fact you'll hear all kinds of combinations of Ole + whatever word in the area. He probably gave it to himself, lots of guys in his age group use it to refer to themselves and like I said many even did it before they got old.

Spurrier has earned the right to call himself whatever he wants. I've gotten some good laughs over the shots he has taken at other's expense over the years.

I'm going to be respectful because you're an Ole Miss fan.
No one here has supplied you with the honest or correct answer. No surprise so ...
Try googling it and get back to us once you do.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he said that he doesn't like being called "Ole Ball Coach". He wants to be called HBC.

He referred to himself as "just an old ball coach" quite often while at UF. That is why the media started calling him that. When he failed in the NFL, and went to USCe, he said he didn't like being called that and starting referring to himself as the "head ball coach".

The old ball coach has learned. Despite what worked for him during 12 seasons at Florida, to win in the NFL, balance is a must.

I've posted this before.

Shortly after he left Florida following the 2001 season, Steve Spurrier went from being the Head Ball Coach to the Ol' Ball Coach. How did that happen?
"I got to the (Washington) Redskins and somehow or another it happened," Spurrier said. "I guess I was just another old ball coach, like I'm another old salesman. It sort of stuck up there. Boy, the Head Ball Coach, I liked that better. But it doesn't really matter. I don't really think much about it."
