It doesn't matter where you hold the SEC basketball tournament, the attendance is going to completely suck.

The only school in the SEC with a large fanbase in basketball willing to travel is Kentucky. The rest will only send a handful of fans within easy driving distance and then only if that team is actually good that year.

That's Kansas City, but I don't expect you to know these things.

St. Louis BTW, would be a great location as an occasional host. StL is a great, one-off event city.

Slive's love affair is less with Atlanta than with the vastly outdated idea that after Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee, the rest of the SEC isn't worth worrying about except as a source of revenue.

This! Have to keep anything basketball related close to Kentucky if you want decent attendance. New Orleans, Dallas, and Houston are too far away

Luckily for you, you won't have to bother going to ATL to watch Ole Miss play in the SEC Championship football game. Quit bitching.

But everything in Dallas or Houston, imo. Maybe San Antonio or Austin every now and then for shits and giggles.

SEC Football Champ game should be alternated between Atlanta and New Orleans. When a West team is home, it needs to be in a West city.

The ACC would move their game into the Dome and never give it up

It is locked up in Nashville for the next 11 years sans 2018 and 2022. Those 2 years are still up for grabs and according to Wikipedia (I know) It is between St. Louis and Tampa for those years.

It was in Tampa back in 2009. Anyone go?

Just rotate everything between New Orleans, Atlanta, and Nashville.

Atlanta for football (central location and easiest to reach by air)
Nashville for M basketball and W basketball (close to the teams that will bring the most fans)
New Orleans for meetings

Probably the reason Atlanta gets so much stuff is that with the Atlanta airport folks can get in and out of the host city. New Orleans is harder to get to and not centrally located. Great town tho.

Proximity is what is suppose to make Atlanta so popular.

Atlanta: Great for UGA, Auburn, and UT. OK for SC and maybe Alabama... everyone else no.

New Orleans: Great for Ole Miss, MSU, LSU, Alabama. OK for Florida and A&M.

Houston: Great for A&M and LSU. OK for Arkansas, MSU, and Ole Miss

Nashville: Great for Vandy, UT, UK, OM, and UGA. OK for everyone else but A&M.

Quite frankly... I'm just tired of Atlanta and its shitty, overpriced, and very inconvenient airport.

I'd take New Orleans over Atlanta any day. Hell, I'd take St Louis over Atlanta any day.

The same can be said for W basketball except switch Tennessee for Kentucky

The problem with Saint Louis and Houston is they are too far from the biggest traveling fans. Also, it was mentioned above, but one of the biggest issues with host cities is media access. Atlanta airport has the best access of any of the SEC cities. The second biggest issue is fans driving vs flying. More fans from core core attendance schools like UK and UT will drive than fly. When the mens SEC was in Nashville they said it brought 120,000 to the city because it was just 1-3 hours (day drive) for all the folks that showed up.

Do you think 120,000 will drive to Houston, Orlando, Saint Louis, or New Orleans? Nothing wrong with these cities, just not in driving distance.

Look at mens basketball season attendance (Top 50) average attendance
#1 Kentucky : 23,100 : roughly 3 hours to Nashville
#8 Tennessee : 16,600 : roughly 3 hours to Nashville
#20 Arkansas : 13,800 : 5 hours (LR) and 8.5 hours (F) to Nashville
#29 Missouri : 12,000 : 6.5 hours (Columbia), 8 hours (KC), and 4.5 (STL) to Nashville
#31 Alabama : 11,200 : Huntsville, Birmingham, and Tuscaloosa are all in northern part of AL
#35 Florida : 10,700 : not great traveling fans
#36 Vanderbilt : 10,600 : will travel in city

Look at womens basketball season attendance (Top 50) average attendance
#1 Tennessee : roughly 3 hours to Nashville
#11 Kentucky : roughly 3 hours to Nashville
#14 Texas A&M
#24 Vanderbilt
#26 South Carolina
#28 LSU
#35 Georgia

Women drop quickly past about the Top 10 (say Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas A&M)

Summary : for basketball the host city needs to be close to Lexington and Knoxville

Slive said last night before the UGA game, that the conference really wants to have every sport identify with a city for its championships ...
Atlanta - Football
Hoover- Baseball
Nashville - default Basketball for 10/12 years , and will probably become the permanent location.

Atlanta is the capital city of the South. DWI

Also, you may want to brush up on your geography. Your list is pretty strange
quote:

New Orleans: Great for Ole Miss, MSU, LSU, Alabama. OK for Florida and A&M.

SC is in easy driving distance of Atlanta. So is Alabama. Alabama is a lot closer to Atlanta than New Orleans. Ole Miss and MSU are about the same distance to each.

Gainesville is over 7 hours from New Orleans.
