Sadly only one SEC town made the list.
Because "college" is the operative word.
You have to have some real higher objective to even be considered.
It's why Chico State in Cali used to win best party school - but not come close to college town.
Real College towns don't exist in the South.
College towns are a blend and mixture of pure students and then sports and acclaimed academia and local populace highly educated.
That doesn't exist in the South by and large according to statistics.
Yahoos showing up for a bonfire who have no connection to the University - does not equal college town.
That's the knock on the SEC...most of the fans have no real connection to the school except for their daddy's daddy...rooted for them real good.
Hell...James Carville spread the gospel. Most LSU fans never set foot in a classroom at LSU and couldn't spell "LSU".
The South is populated by hangers' on - wannabes - and false fans.
You can't have a great college football town - when most of your fans never went to college.
It's a fraud. And silly, really. You have grown men who die each Saturday with no connection to the school whatsoever. What are they dying for?
You are a tourist. LSU doesn't give a crap about you. School pride?
LSU has basically no school pride...it has hanger on pride...like Bama...no real pride...how do you have school pride when most of your fans never attended your school?

College Station, TX does not come close to fitting the picture you just painted; on the contrary, the city's reality is a complete cultural opposite.
Having been a faculty member at A&M (before accepting a position at another university several months ago), I can confidently state that our faculty's acclaimed membership in academe has meshed well with the city's very educated populace ( LINK).
Moreover, most of our fans do have a real connection to our university. When I read about the norm at other schools (e.g., posts like yours), I realize how special what we have in Aggieland is.

The thing is, the OP doesn't realize the depth of hypocrisy in his post...no school is more characterized by sidewalk fans than USC. The vast majority of their fans not only couldn't get accepted to USC, they've never even set foot on the USC campus. Due to USC playing their home games off-campus at the Coliseum.

This is an extremely narrow definition of "college town." By definition there are college towns in the South.

Have you ever seen that show Campus PD? The episodes where they are in Chico are hilarious.
Tons of hippies.

Missing the point though. My post had less to do with how far the stadium was from campus, and more with what little reason the vast majority of USC's fan base had for stepping on a campus they couldn't even get accepted to or afford to attend if they did.

Interesting fact about chico that I had no idea was true until a little while ago, its really fricking old. Like only 10 years younger than a&m. I think its the second oldest university in the cal state system

That is odd.
I looked into doing the National Student Exchange program thing a few years ago, basically studying abroad within the United States. Chico, along with many other schools in the Cal state system were on the list of possible schools. I remember looking into it and thinking it might not exactly be the "party" I was looking for.
Needless to say none of the schools in the UC system were offered because, as I discovered, the cal state system is shite compared to it.

I'd love to visit Fayetteville--as would many other Ags.
This is why everyone was telling you guys to come to Fayetteville this past season when you had a few guys asking the rant if they should go to Ole Miss or Arkansas.

Should never be mentioned in a survey/post about best college towns.
I did my time in CS, but it wasn't special at all. Good people, though.
