Philisophically, I'm essentially an Absurdist. So I see some potent symbolism in having 12 empty seats to represent how good your fans are. It's pretty funny, from a certain point of view. I just don't think that's what we are going for.

"From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. And from the inside looking out, you can't explain it."
These seats seem par for the course when trying to describe and explain the various happenings around Aggieland.

It's turned into an absolute clusterfrick.

I'm glad my old curmudgeon self seems to be on the right side of thinking this is a horrible idea.

Yeah I finally made up my mind and I don't like this it just feels forced to me.

I don't expect this to ever come out, but my guess is this was originally intended to honor the 12 dead bonfire students.
The more I think about it, the more certain I become of this. Should have run with that idea instead of this hackneyed, forced substitute reason.
HEAR YE HEAR YE:
The #HNIC hath changed his stance on the issue at hand. Given the clarification that the 12 empty seats have nothing to do with the 12 we lost at Bonfire (which would have been a fitting tribute IMO), and are instead being used as a weak comeback to the stadium feature that is Seattle's #12 flagpole in their stadium, I hereby reject the proposal out of hand and throw my support behind TelcoAg's petition.

My guess is, they sold the idea based on Bonfire. Months later, at least one of the victim's families raised an objection. Now they're stuck.
I totally understand the objection from the family as well. A&M using your kids memory to pitch the football brand seems a bit vile, tbh.

I completely agree Telco. I signed your petition.
They really need to get this under control before the mainstream media finds out about the dissension in the ranks and blows it up into a huge Aggie joke.

I don't, but that's just me.

I just feel like, putting a memorial to your dead kid in the middle of cheering, screaming fans doesn't really show them the respect they deserve. It would also make it harder for me to watch games, and to move on.
There is a proper, beautiful memorial dedicated to mourning the loss of the 12 fallen. I think anything else would dilute that sentiment. But, to each their own.

I was thinking more along the lines of "gone but not forgotten." BUT I admittedly do not have kids, much less have lost one, so I'll defer to those who have.

This says it all.
There is no need for 12 empty seats to remind those around them of something none of us will ever forget. Let those lost rest in respectful peace.
Jmo take it fwiw

Also, yeah, Cook isn't behind this. This is a board driven memorial that someone, who has almost no marketing experience, thought was a good idea.
It's a terrible idea. And is the responsible board member/members adamant about going through with this? Are they that determined to proceed with this misguided "memorial", or was this really just a branding stunt?
If branding, could he/them be convinced there are better ideas? Hell, I'd rather move the E. King Gill statue to that spot in the stands, rather than have 12 empty seats. That would be both more visible, send a clear message, and I have to think it would be unique in all football.

I think'd be pretty cool to move the E. King Gill statue to the 50, in the middle of the second deck. That's ONE seat, because the football team is ELEVEN people and one more makes TWELVE, he'd always be standing, and it would be a marketing stunt that'd work because no one else has a statue in the middle of the stands and the camera could focus on it. It wouldn't be empty - he, as representative of all of us, would always be there.
Just something, anything other than 12 EMPTY seats to supposedly represent good fans, when empty seats are known as the inverse quality of good fans. That's just crazy and we can't go through with it.

I could go with this.

Either make it about Bonfire or scrap the empty seats idea.
Too late to do the former, and ridiculous to keep the concept in light of that.
