We do need to give them an allowance of maybe $25/$30 a week for movies, burgers, or pizza on a date or with a group of friends.
Pretty sure they get more than this.

The stipend amount most thrown around is $500/mo.
I see no problem with that whatsoever.

so I'm coming at this as a former college athlete. first off not everyone is on a full ride in non football sports. my sport only got 9.9 scholarships to fill a team, women got 14 (thanks title ix.) anywho back in my day bama only served 15-18 meals a week and broke us off a few hundred biweekly to cover the rest, if your scholly covered that. obviously selling books you got for free was a perk. I liked the free Nike shite too.
with that said sports like mine make negative dollars... it's highly unlikely to be kept around if the bill expands. I'd much rather see more people like me get the opportunity to compete and get educated than only a few sports get paid while others get axed. I was blessed enough to end up at a school with big football money, some of the stories from friends at less loved programs had way lower end facilities. I know most of them couldn't afford the influx of additional costs at all. it's entirely not what college athletics are about.

Should collegiate athletes receive stipends?
They already do. I'm sure someone has pointed this out already.
If they want to get paid, then they can give up their scholarships and pay for college like the rest of us.

Nope. Bigger problems out there like the cost of universities/grad schools in the first place.
Take your "stipend money" and parts of donations, coach salaries etc. and make it to where the average student who is actually joining the work force (instead of providing entertainment) isn't in huge debt before they get a paycheck.
Then we can talk about the poor athletes who can get degrees debt free for playing a sport.

You evidently have no contact with the real world and the cost to two hamburgers, fries and two cokes, gas for the car and the price of a picture show, not to mention going to a club.
I think failure to address the issue head on is to ask for corrupt system we have now, encouraging young people to lie and cheat.
yes I think they need a stipend probably in the neighbor hood of $100/week. I have no knowledge of the actual amount of legitimate cash they are now currently allotted. If they are dependent on their families for such cash then I think they need a stipend.

I also was a student-athlete, and believe there should be a small stipend to cover costs of living. Not everyone (most don't, actually aside from football and basketball) gets a full ride and there are walk-on's who don't get anything aside from some practice gear. Yet they have the same obligations as the guys who do.
Example, one of my good friends started as a walk on and eventually received a 20% scholarship. In addition to a full load of classes and 20 hrs a week of practice, he was working as many as 3 part time jobs just to cover living expenses. Also needed a hefty loan to cover the rest of his tuition. Oh yeah... he was also an All-American and an SEC champion in his sport. There are actually many student-athletes in similar situations - they should absolutely get a stipend.

They do get a stipend for food. And it is way more than they need to spend on food, gas, beer, pot, etc...

They do get a stipend. I don't know how people don't understand this. How about this, instead of giving them scholarships and a stipend and other benefits we will pay them 65,000 a year. That sound fair?(it will come out the same)

A full scholarship to a university is plenty.
But I think being allowed to use your own name to make money should be allowed. The NCAA should not have full reign on a kid's name.

No, but as a compensation for their loyal service, they should be allowed to smoke as much pot as they want without being kicked off the team, aka The Lester Clause.

I'll say yes. Collegiate sports are like a full time job on top of classes. Not saying these kids live a woeful life by any means, but they do work hard and a lot of money is made off their backs. Obviously I agree that they have the opportunity to receive a good education in return, which is huge.
Just have the NCAA foot the bill, they're good for it.

The question that must be answered is why? What is your foundation statement?
Personally I am not for additional benefits to scholarship athletes. Another question is what is wrong with current rules relative to extra benefits that needs addressing?

It comes from the extra money saved. There was never a moment where money was an issue. Now from some athletes they may be using there money in order to buy stupid crap or give back to their family. But no amount of money will fix this problem. Now non full ride athletes get screwed, but they aren't the ones that are doing the complaining

Some of you are obviously confusing stipends with various other things such as Pell Grants etc that supply cash to all students.
Many scholar-athletes are not allowed to work, even in the summer. The gist of the idea is too help these kids avoid or say no to those out there willing and able to exchange $100 handshakes and such.
