10 were awarded by either the Coaches or AP and are beyond question. 10 is also the CFB record
If you've got more than anyone else anyway, and the next closest is 2 titles away, why not just use the real number? It's more than anyone else any way, and the next closest in the SEC is like 3, right?

I measure the teams worth on their record.
I measure my self worth on not going to Auburn so it is incredibly high.

There is only one real questionable claim, and that said we should have been champs in 66 and weren't, so we'll claim the frick out of 41.
I don't get the pissing matches over it though. Everyone who matters goes by whatever the school claims. Having your own idea of how many a school has is stupid. And hell, no matter how you count titles, Bama has more than everyone else.

When Alabama passed them in NC's, ND changed their claimed NC's to pass Bama again. The Alabama Sports Information Director used the ND (new) method and that put Bama back in front of ND. Since then both Universities have left the formula as the one that gives Alabama 15.
THIS. My grandad has a old program boasting only the Bryant titles and listing us as tied with Notre Dame who had a handfull of recent titles.

What is the real reason for all those claims? Why do they do it while other schools do not do it? Does anybody, including Alabama fans, really know why ?
In 1983, Bryant had just retired and Pat Dye was building a machine at AU that just won the SEC title and was named national champion by more selectors than anyone else in the country.
Bama started feeling insecure and knew a bunch of arse whuppings from Dye were on deck.
Therefore, their SID claimed 6 new, additional, retroactive, and in many cases bullshite titles to make the gumps feel more important.

How many years will it take for another school to touch Bama's 23 SEC Championships?

The only really questionable ones we added was 1941. All of the others were teams that went to the Rose Bowl and won or tied.

We've won more titles in the last 4 years than your school has in its entire history

If they would just drop 41. The others are legit.
25: won the only bowl game
26: tied in the only bowl game
30: won the only bowl game
34: won the only bowl game
61: AP/Coaches
64: AP/Coaches
65: AP
73: Coaches
78: AP
79: AP/Coaches
92: AP/Coaches
09: BCS
11: BCS
12: BCS
They should claim 45 and/or 66 instead of 41.

Full BS Story
Because before Alabama got 12, it only got six.
Atcheson is the former Alabama sports information director who added five pre-Bear Bryant national titles to the team's media guide in the 1980s. Those changes still resonate today with one burning question: Just how many national championships does Alabama have, anyway?
The NCAA record book recognizes Alabama with seven "consensus" national championships -- the six by Bryant and 1992.(Editors Note: since this was published you can add 3 more) According to this list, "consensus" means a championship bestowed since 1950 by any, but not necessarily all, of the following: the Associated Press, United Press International, Football Writers Association of America, National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame, USA Today/CNN or USA Today/ESPN.
Atcheson said that in the 1983 media guide, he added the five pre-Bryant national titles now listed -- 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934 and 1941. Taylor Watson, curator at the Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa, said it was actually the 1986 media guide.
"I tried to make Alabama football look the best it could look and just make it as great as it could possibly be," Atcheson said. "I was a competitor myself with the other schools, and what they bragged about and boasted about, I wanted people to know the best about my school."
