Our athletic department doesn't rake in the top gross revenue, but it a lot more profitable than most in the SEC. We have lower expenditures, probably because most of our facilities were largely paid for out of donor pockets with large gifts, so our debt service is a lot less than most.

i think that's maybe a bit broad stroked. maybe education and financial stability have something to do with it too?
I said "generally". There are plenty of non-alums in Central and Southern Arkansas who see the light.
I feel like for every one person in that group who wants the games moved to Fayetteville, there are two who don't.

so our debt service is a lot less than most.
Tennessee, LSU, and Bama had debt out the arse. Tennessee is over 100m in debt.

Interesting. I wonder how long y'all keep that up with Bret.

I don't want to take anecdotal evidence based on a few people as gospel so I'm curious as to what the feeling seems to be in Little Rock and the surrounding area about the move.
People outside Arkansas don't realize this is a hack article by a hack author. The author's very premise is myopic and he's ingratiating himself with his Central Arkansas readership.
I have never understood how the fan bases at other school's can travel to their university but ours can't. Really? We're not the only poor southern state where some fans have to travel to get to the game.

Outsider's opinion.
I find it a bit archaic that Arkansas still holds games at WMS. It seems pointless. Play your home games at home, where they belong. If people really want to see Arkansas football, they can and will travel to Fayetteville. That cool little creation called the interstate makes it easy.
We have moved past the days where War Memorial Stadiums and Legion Fields are needed.

It doesn't bother me in the least if all the games are in Fayetteville. I despise losing.

I'd say the majority of fans from southern or eastern Arkansas are big supporters of games at WMS. That's all they've ever known and probably as far as they drive to go to a game. These are the people that bitch about moving games to campus. These are also the people that just buy a Hog shirt at Walmart.

I've got some great memories at WMS but the place is a dump and it's time to move on.
sadly, this.
and honestly, the uproar around here was much worse when the LSU game was moved to NWA. i guess that set the mindset that it was all happening sooner rather than later.

I see us keeping one non-con game there for another decade. That's ok with me.
We'll still play a basketball game in North Little Rock and a baseball series there, too.

Same here. Phase it out over the next few years then leave. WMS's case for keep games erodes every day. With the expansion that's coming up it will be time to move all games to the hill.

I don't see the need to drag it out. Play them all in Fayetteville so the debate will end.

I quit reading when I saw that. The guy clearly doesn't have a clue.
None of the guys in the state sports media do, especially guys like Nelson and Jim Harris.
Our state sports media, albeit like most in the SEC, is primarily comprised of middle-aged white guys who cling to the past and who aren't very good at both accepting inevitable change and understanding the nuances of modern day college athletics (money). They'll hem and haw about how moving games to Fayetteville will "divide the fan base" and how the Hogs will "lose the support of Central, East and Lower Arkansas," all in a transparent effort just to preach to the choir that is their dwindled readership of other middle-aged white guys who also don't understand modern day college athletics and probably haven't set foot in Razorback Stadium in years (if ever).
Mind you, these are the same dim bulbs who spent the better part of a half decade pontificating about how Houston Nutt was the best coach that we'd ever get and that we'd never get a big name coach to come here.

Are there any Hog fans here that want to keep playing at WMS? Obviously there are some in the state.
Posted on 12/3/13 at 4:16 pm to Politiceaux
The casual fans in central/south AR mostly.

lots, but obviously not in NWA.
gamedays bring in alot of business, especially to the restaurants in the area, so i know all those invested are probably not too happy.

Ditto, and it's sad that other fans can see this while our own cannot.
Others have probably explained the reasons, but WMS was a necessity back when Fayetteville was a tiny college town in the middle of the freaking Ozark Mountains that was practically impossible to get to. Northwest Arkansas had an absolutely tiny population, Razorback Stadium had a capacity smaller than that of War Memorial, and the political/power/money people were all in Little Rock. All of those reasons are nonexistent anymore with the creation and growth (and money) of Walmart and its vendor community (NWA is exploding and has been for the better part of three decades), the creation of I-540, the shift in economic power to NWA, and the decade-old renovation of Razorback Stadium to a 70k+ capacity.
Plus, it's so stupid when I hear people say "how will people follow the Hogs?!!?" Erm, they have these things called computers, televisions, radios and the internets.
