Unless Saban says he is retiring in the next few years, why are people so convinced Smart is going to wait around on the Bama job? The only time I can think of a "coach in waiting" scenario working out is Jimbo Fisher, and he was waiting on a guy in his late 70s to retire. I don't know, I just think it's a poor career move to remain in an assistant coaching role for what could be 5+ more years when you could have the opportunity to get paid more than double what you are now at a school where you can certainly build an elite football team. Not specifically Nebraska, but if a premier job becomes available, he'd be a fool not to take it.

I mean, as of right now, he could probably take a HC job at another school next year, coach for a few years, and if Bama really wants him still, they could hire him at that point when Saban retires.

Agree. It is dumb. There is no guarantee bama will offer Kirby the job, there is no knowing when Saban will retire, and if Bama is really sold on him they would go get him wherever he is when saban does retire.

Anyway, I don't much care. Saban runs that defense. Kirby does his job well and I am sure has learned a frickload that could help some other program out due to his time under saban. But since my caring is dependant on whether it hurts bama and I do not think Kirby leaving would hurt for long, IDC.

Not doing what it took to get the AU job was an epic frick up on Kirby's part and he may never in his life have an opportunity like that again, but it worked out well for AU, so I haz the happy as far as that goes.

Wasn't Joker a CIW? Those are the only two I can think of where a CIW actually became HC of the program.
