The article is referencing both new construction and renovations. The new houses that are being built are for fraternities that have been on campus for a long time. My fraternity's house underwent a $2.5mil renovation in 2008 but had been on campus since the 1930s.

Btw, UVa and Alabama both have very similar Greek communities with regard to their presence within the student body and the architecture of their houses. For example, I believe SAE is the biggest fraternity in the US and was founded at Alabama.

The fraternity houses at UVa are really nice but generally speaking the houses at Alabama are just ridiculous.

I read somewhere that the University provided financing on some of these new houses, or at least some of the sorority houses. Is that normal down there?
