They are true believers. That's a big part of the problem. Obviously our political system is imperfect, but name one that is. So, you have to wheel and deal to manage to get things accomplish. Outcomes are what matter, not philosophy or even what your constituents really want. The true believer isn't cynical enough to play the game.
