Tuesday Updates (per Matt May over at 247.com):
LINK
quote:
**Stoops said CB J. D. Harmon "doesn't look like he'll be with us" this season because of academic issues. He isn't practicing.
** Mark Stoops singles out freshmen Alex Montgomery, Jason Hatcher and Ryan Timmons as having impressed this far.
**Kentucky is limiting the amount of throws Max Smith is making early in camp given his past shoulder issues.

I'll never understand how kids piss away the opportunities that they have by making themselves academically ineligible. They have all the help in the world with the CATS program.
Posted on 8/6/13 at 6:13 pm to CatFan81
It's incredibly frustrating for someone like Harmon who already has a year in the program and was going to likely start at CB. He has any kind of success at that position in the SEC and the world could've been his oyster.
Hopefully he can turn it around.

Here's JDrum's update over on Scout. Goes more indepth than May's obviously.
From the article:
On Max Smith's limited reps
And an interesting bit on the QB competition
LINK
From the article:
quote:
Stoops said the excitement level wasn’t quite the same Tuesday as it was when the Cats opened camp, but labeled the workout “businesslike.” “We had a few more mix-ups today than yesterday due to install, just with the tempo of practice and guys getting worn down with the reps we’re getting, but guys have impressed me with how fast we’re going. And if you asked (UK offensive coordinator) Neal (Brown) it’s probably not fast enough, but still at a pretty good clip.”
On Max Smith's limited reps
quote:
Smith has experienced some soreness in his throwing shoulder over the summer, and at one point had considered a minor surgical procedure to correct it, but opted against that measure. “We’re limiting his number of throwsl,” Stoops said. “He seems to be doing fine so far.” Asked if he was concerned about the situation moving forward, Stoops said: “Absolutely we’re worried about injury. Just like last year, we know what can happen here with injuries, especially at quarterback, so we’ve got to have a lot of guys ready. Again, right now he seems to be fine, but we’re being a little bit cautious with him and limiting some of his throws.”
And an interesting bit on the QB competition
quote:
The staff has been very reluctant to give clues about who is standing out thus far, but Stoops said Tuesday that the equal-reps situation may not last too much longer. “If 1 and 2 separate themselves from 3, yeah, we need to start doing that as we get closer to game time,” he said.

Some quotes from the blog:
quote:
"(Wide receiver) Alex Montgomery jumped out at me, made a couple (plays)," Stoops said. "(Wide receiver) Ryan Timmons jumped out at me, made a couple nice plays. (Defensive end) Jason Hatcher's doing some really good things."
quote:
"The older guys are all much better than we were in the spring, so it's been good," Stoops said. "We're getting a lot of reps, we're getting a lot of work in, so it's good for those guys."
quote:
Stoops, however, did announce on Tuesday that cornerback J.D. Harmon is not practicing and is not expected to be with the team for the 2013 season, but that won't deter the Cats. "We've just got a next-man-up mentality," defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot said. "Whoever we have for game one will be the guy that plays and we don't fret, our players know that. Whoever the next guy is just steps up and plays."

Day 3 Updates
From JDrum at Scout:
On the ongoing QB battle
Regarding installing the Air Raid Offense
On who stepped out today
Also noted that the first scrimmage, which is typically the first Saturday of practice, is being placed on hold in order to give the guys a little more time to acclimate.

From JDrum at Scout:
On the ongoing QB battle
quote:
“They’re doing good,” Stoops said. “It’s not easy on anybody when you’re rotating. This was the third day, and the third guy is starting with the 1s and rotating them all through. It’s a little bit difficult, for sure, when there’s three guys, but again, we need to be fair, and they’re all good players, they all have different strengths. We’re confident that whoever is behind center will help us win some games.”
Regarding installing the Air Raid Offense
quote:
Brown said the first three days of practice have been dedicated to installation of the offense and that not much depth chart movement will occur until the offense moves beyond that. An even bigger concern for the Cats’ new OC on this day was continuing to establish the type of breakneck tempo he wants to see from his edition of the “Air Raid” offense. “Not good,” Brown said of the pace he’s witnessed so far. “It’s been OK. We’ve got to get a lot better. That’s the hardest thing when you’re trying to get new guys, and we’ve got a bunch, as you guys know. The hardest thing to get them accustomed to, the tempo we’re playing at. Really, if you came out here and watched, it’s not bad, but it’s nowhere near what we want to do. It’s not near the pressure we need to put on the defense.”
On who stepped out today
quote:
“I noticed Badet a little bit. He jumped out at me,” Stoops said. “He’s got some juice. He can run a little bit, and he made a couple of nice catches.” Brown said he was also pleased with several of UK’s walk-on players at receiver who have a legit opportunity to crack the rotation this season due to lack of depth at the position.
Also noted that the first scrimmage, which is typically the first Saturday of practice, is being placed on hold in order to give the guys a little more time to acclimate.

Just a FYI, there's no media availability on Thursdays and Sundays during camp (hence no report for today).
The only thing of note is there's a rumor floating around (I believe originated on UK's Rivals site) that Za'Darius Smith was seen leaving the complex today wearing a boot. Someone tweeted C-J's Kyle Tucker about it and this was his response.
So it seems to likely just be a mild sprain or something along those lines.

Also tonight is UK's Fan Day. Practice got pushed to 7:45 pm because of the weather. Several folks on twitter (i.e. Matt May, Kyle Tucker, KSR, etc) are estimating about 5,000 in attendance.
Za'Darius Smith had also been spotted wearing the boot in question from yesterday. No idea if he'll practice tonight on a wet field.
Some pics:

They also have the Air Raid sirens going tonight.

Wish more fans would have showed up. Guess the weather is keeping people away.
Saw on Twitter that the quarterbacks footwork has done a 180 since last season.

Around 10 I believe, but with the way the weather has been here I'd be surprised if they pull it off. It's been absolutely pouring here in Louisville and apparently areas around Lexington have seen up to 4-5 inches of rain.

They also hadn't really pushed it like they did the Spring Game. I knew several people who didn't even know it was going on tonight.
But yeah, the weather has been pretty bad. Somebody on Twitter had asked whether they needed to check to make sure the Air Raid sirens weren't actually weather related.

That sucks.
If we get one more inch of rain here in ATL, we're at the yearly average for precipitation this early in the year. It's been awful.

It had been pretty dry, humid, and hot as hell here all week. It was a just a matter before it broke open.
BTW here's some notable tweets I've seen out on the interwebz:

Watching practice with former Cats QB Freddie Maggard. He like Timmons? "Oh, I love him. He's Percy Harvin."

Yeah, Maggard is the one that made the comment about the QB footwork. Also said that Kyle Meadows is what an SEC Freshman OT should look like.

They also have Ryan Timmons, Javess Blue, Daryl Collins, and Demarco Robinson fielding punts.
Max Smith is running with the 1s with Collins, Legree, Demarco, and Sanders out there too.

I look for Blue to be with the first team by the time the season starts. He just got on campus so he's not up to speed with the playbook yet or anything.
Posted on 8/9/13 at 7:50 pm to CatFan81
Whitlow apparently just threw a beauty down the field to Jeff Badet and smoked the secondary.
Posted on 8/9/13 at 7:50 pm to CatFan81
I think so too. From all accounts he's a hell of an athlete.
I can't wait to see Timmons in action though. He could really blow things open with his versatility.
