As much of a talent as Jones is- he is very raw
Definitely. He probably got more coaching and learned more technique-wise in the practices for the MS-AL game and UA game than he did all throughout high school.
The thing I like most about him is his relentless motor. The dude plays his arse off whenever he is on the field. Hopefully he will bring some energy to some of our current guys that he will be pushing for PT.

. Jadaveon Clowney didnt start as a true freshman and he is the best DE talent we have seen in a long time.
Jadaveon Clowney also had Melvin Ingram and Devin Taylor in front of him. I like Denico and Preston, but they aren't Melvin Ingram and Devin Taylor.

All true...
And Jones appears to(by all accounts) be a very attentive, VERY fast learner. Look how far he came in a single season in highschool. Everything I've heard is that he asks(excellent) questions on the field. That, along with talent, are an ingredient to help out/play early -- although I certainly hope we don't see him starting until late in the season...

And Chris Jones will be outstanding- but he isnt Clowny either. He's gonna play, but I'll be very surprised if he starts as a Freshman

Chris Jones will be like every other elite athlete that comes from Miss. State. By that I mean he will get a chance to shine in SEC play but we won't have the other tools together to make very good teams that go the distance and put the spotlight on us and our elite players. It's good for guys like Chris Jones because they get to be the man, he'll be the stand out player on the defense and look great for the NFL. It's a fair trade off for guys like CJ, you don't win the championship but you make a nice college career that propels you into the first round of the draft.
I'm praying for that one year where all the stars align and we put a solid group together of alike elite players, either by luck or by crook.

And the whole point of my statement was that he doesn't need to be. We don't have two guys who're getting drafted in the first three/four rounds in front of him. To put it in perspective, Denico and Preston totalled 9.5 sacks last year(and if I remember correctly most of Prestons sacks were garbage time). Ingram had 9 the year before Clowney came. Taylor had 7.5 and a pick-6. If you compare careers(which are notably both an incoming senior(Autry/Ingram) and an incoming junior(Taylor/Smith)) the disparity is even more apparent.
Denico AND Preston(careers)
84 tackles(50 solo), 15 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 1 INT, 4FF
Devin Taylor(up to but not including 2011)
74 tackles(49 solo), 18.5 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 1INT(1TD), 1FR, 2FF
Melvin Ingram(up to but not including 2011)
63 Tackles(41 solo), 15.5 TFL, 11.5 Sacks, 1 FF
Taylor and Ingram were both more proven AND more talented than Preston and Denico are. The situations really aren't comparable.

ok- let me explain it the way the coaches are thinking right now.
Autry really came on last season and was a force at the end of 2012. He will also be a Sr- his spot at SDE is rock solid.
Chris Jones is an outstanding talent that is raw and needs to learn alot of technique. He also needs to develop alot more shoulder strength.
Smith and Brown are guys that have been in the program awhile now. The coaches are high on both of these guys- especially Brown. They will be battling each other for the starting spot and should be solid on technique by the Fall.
If you put Jones at WDE with Smith and Brown, then that leaves AJ Jefferson working 2nd team to rest Autry. You also cut down reps for all 3 guys at WDE as they battle for the spot. It will take Jones at least 2/3 of the season to overtake those guys- if he does at all as a true freshman.
The best route is to let Jones back up Autry in the position Jones will play as a Sophomore- and he also doesnt have to learn two positions. Get his 20 snaps per game and experience while he gets better on technique. This also allows Smith and Brown to grow at their positions while getting more of the reps they need.

Because obviously you work with the coaches everyday and know what they've said and think around the team more than everyone else does.

Smith yes, Brown no.

While this is true, this has nothing to do with how good Jones is.

Many reports at the end of the season said that AJ Jefferson was impressing.

Are you saying that we don't rotate guys anyways? Or are you saying that if we have three talented guys we should only play one or two?

Broomfield to Safety and Eulls to DT has proven that our staff isn't afraid to move people out of position if it betters the team.

Once again, you're assuming we don't rotate people. All this does is make Smith vs Brown more competitive to get more second string reps, and it doesn't matter who wins. If Brown wins out we have a better, younger guy, and if Smith wins Brown still has another year to get ready.

No- but I do know someone that talks to the coaches almost every damn day. And he does know what they are thinking and their plans.
Bottom line- I'm telling you dont count on Chris Jones starting unless we have some injuries at DE.
We'll see this Fall who is correct

I've just never had any expectations at all for AJ Jefferson. Hope I'm wrong.

I think he can be a solid career back-up. Every team needs those

Depth chart came out:
DE: Smith/Brown
DE: Autry/Chris Jones
Jones backing up Autry just like I said...just wanted to point that out
3. Chris Jones is all likelihood wont start 1 game in 2013. He will back up Denico and get his feet wet this season- playing 20 plays a game or so. He will then be ready to take that SDE spot over as a Soph. We dont start true freshmen- havent since 2010.

1. I like Preston(and Ryan and AJ for that matter), but Chris Jones looks prepped to start immediately.
