When you have blood clots form in your lower extremities and they break free from their location and go up the body they can land one of two places, in the head for a stroke or in the lungs for a pulmonary embolism. It's basically a blood clot that blocks the pulmonary artery from freely oxygenating the blood in the lungs. It can be fatal for anybody but especially so for people that are elderly.
