I was born in Oklahoma, and we don't really consider ourselves "southern" in the true since of the word. But we're further south than Missouri, so I know Missouri doesn't have a claim to this fight if Oklahoma doesn't. Also once you cross the Mississippi River you're kinda out of the southeast and in the southwest. The only exceptions are Arkansas (kinda) and Louisiana, since the Mississippi River more or less cuts the state in half (but of course no one is gonna question whether or not Louisiana is in the South, lol).

A lot of truth to this. In Arkansas, I've noticed the farther you get from the Mississippi River, the less southern the culture gets. At least it seems that way to me. Most of western AR is still southern, but it's a little different.

Also if your on I-40 leaving Memphis it's amazing how flat the land gets once you cross the Mississippi and enter Arkansas. Once I enter Arkansas and see all that flat land I truly consider myself in the West.
