I don't believe I said he should be punished for his viewpoints. I said that sharing them in a public forum as an authority figure is an issue. You can couch it as free speech if you want but part of accepting the role of teacher is taking the responsibility of shaping young minds. That should not include trying to impress upon others your viewpoints. Additionally, if his viewpoints are discriminatory towards a particular sexual orientation, then I would imagine his "behaviors" such as grading and/or treatment of such individuals in his class reflect these beliefs. Much like if you worked in an HR department at any corporation and shared these beliefs you would be punished. Equal opportunity employment legislation makes that a tricky position.
I'm about as open minded as they get but I would take no issue with this individual no longer being allowed to teach. At the end of the day if this occurred in the classroom, he took taxpayer dollars (his salary) to take the soapbox and discuss his personal views...
