Everyone is growing really fast, and I'm not sure its a good thing. I'd rather that schools got more selective than pumping out kids with no chance at getting a career capable of paying off their loans

Unlike you, I actually have a degree from WashU on my wall. Admit it, you're just a Fontbonne student...

I agree. We're going to keep taking it until there's a real alternative for folks in our state.

Arkansas needs to start being selective. The campus is busting at it every side right now.

Part of the mission of any state university is to provide the service of higher education to the citizens of the state. As degrees become more and more required for every job the schools have to continue growing to fulfill their mission to the state. The requirement of the school to educate the citizens will generally require growth.
Population growth only compounds the issue until more specialized state schools come into existence or grow enough to provide a quality education at a reasonable expense.
Our research mission is strong, but the ag school (that would normally be housed outside of the flagship research university in most states) does take some of our pure research focus away at Mizzou as well as generally requiring less stringent admission standards.

My standard response to all of these threads when they're started by other posters is:
A.) We're here, and were accepted unanimously.
B.) We're not fricking leaving.
C.) Keep sending the checks.

I understand this, and it is why state schools will never be Vandy. Those schools can be extremely selective in students and faculty. State schools are stuck educating the masses
Us state schools have to provide a degree holding workforce (note I didn't say educated workforce) for our states
Higher education needs some serious reform, I don't think any of us would disagree with that

Yeah, the money is too good and yall will fit in eventually. Good troll job by Kilo though

I've heard they are going to cut off the "in-state for Texas kids" hook up. The way they see it, the rich ones and the smart ones will still come here since our out of state tuition is still lower than in-state at some of the big Texas schools
I would be in favor of bumping up the minimum ACT. The Arkansas outgoing high school senior ACT average is 20.3 (national avg is 21). We should be at 20 I think for starters

Do they have this for Missouri kids too?

What is the point of that anyways? Was it a "get more money in here because Arkansas kids aren't coming and we want to grow" thing? Football? Texarkana? What is the point?

Yes, Arkansas lets all neighboring state kids have in-state tuition. (TX, LA, MS, TN, MO, OK)
Posted on 1/14/13 at 7:32 pm to Mizzeaux
I think its for growth. I know Missouri does the same thing with the Illinois kids as well. At least they did. Not sure if that has changed.
Posted on 1/14/13 at 7:33 pm to Mizzeaux
I think it was just to appeal to a larger base of kids. Hearing that you get in-state tuition is huge for a kid who has to pay their way with loans
Not like those neighboring states produce any better or worse kids anyway, the state lines are just lines on a map. I think more schools should take Arkansas's approach
ETA: The ones in the "growing" stage anyway

I guess, but if their education is being subsidized by the state I don't see a whole lot of benefit unless you're becoming more selective to increase the stature of the university.
ETA: The 20 ACT kid from Texas is probably the same student as the 20 ACT kid from Arkansas. I could see doing it if the Texas kids needed a 26 or something.

The mission of the University of Arkansas changed in the 1990s. When John White became chancellor, it went from a "we educate our state and pour money into football and greek life" school to a real university looking to be nationally competitive. We raised $1 billion for academics, endowed new tenure faculty, replaced tiny buildings, everything
Its not that long ago we were a school of about 15,000 kids. Now we have 28000.

In the 1990s, we didn't have enough 20 ACT kids in Arkansas for where we wanted to be and we needed to grab some from other states
