I read a story online a few weeks ago talking about HS football in southern states. I remember it specifically said the state of South Carolina had almost 1200 high schools playing football. Tennessee had around 300 and Kentucky 200. That plays into it some. Kentucky high school football is abysmal. Doesn't produce more than 4-5 D-1 talent per year, and they all go out of state most of the time.

Few private schools have been around that long. The only one that comes to mind is MBA. A good portion of the private schools, in middle Tennessee at least, are white flight schools.

I think the lack of football talent in Tennessee high schools is directly related to the incest and inbreeding that is wide spread in the state. Also, XXX moonshine is so profitable that junior is pulled out of school in the sixth or seventh grade to help diddy at the still in the rural areas which includes Brentwood & Gallatin.

Tennessee produces top notch talent, but as has been mentioned, there is just not a lot of it. A lot of it has to do with where the emphasis on sports is placed. Having grown up in the suburbs of Nashville, football is big, but not win at all costs big. Not to mention, many school systems in Tennessee are trying to put a higher emphasis on education (not necessarily working).
The emergence of Ensworth, the sporadic high profile players from traditional private schools, and the steady production in Memphis will produce enough talent to keep the state relevant in recruiting, but I doubt TN will ever catch the likes of Alabama and Mississippi, etc.

TN and KY don't have a claim to the "black belt" or "blue belt" with the notable exception of Memphis.

Because Alabama made the Tenn faithful quit having athletically talented children. We are starting to see the drop off in reproduction.
