Bears repeating
IF the new 4-team model includes an "Alabama clause" to potentially keep a second highly-ranked SEC team out of the playoff, this move makes even more sense. It's the ultimate trump card. A #2 Bama team vs a (likely) highly ranked team from the Big12, in a game that Bama rolls, and in the event of an LSU loss, could EASILY split the national title.
He's leveraging his version of playoffs...either sooner or later!

this is a direct attempt to split the national title if/when one of our conference teams is wrongfully left out of the playoff.

Yea b/c the 2 best were sec teams. I don't have a problem with that.
What about in 95, 98, 99, and 2000?

Mike Slive just became my new favorite person.

Just checking in now, so I'm still not sure what's going on. Did the SEC and Big 12 basically just invent a new BCS bowl?
Also, I can't see both conferences failing to field a top 4 team very often.

I kinda feel like the opposite. The Rose Bowl model has kinda faded from relevance.
Somewhat true, but Delany uses it as leverage when trying to set up the playoff system the way he wants. This gives Slive that same leverage. Smart move.
I think Slive's only interest is in the money that would result. I do believe that there are some PAC/Big 10 folks who have (wrongly) convinced themselves of the near religious importance of the Rose Bowl being always Big 10/PAC.
As a fan I don't really care about this nonsense and while I want the SEC to compete and win financially I don't want that to come at the expense of college football making even less sense. The position I think Slive ought to be making is for a playoff with either the top four conference champs or a six team field that also includes two at larges.
Up until this point I think teh Big 10 and PAC blocks have set themselves up for criticism by being the only ones against a better solution for the postseason (mostly revolving around the Rose Bowl issue)... what Slive is at risk of doing is essentially abandoning whatever moral high ground he had in public perception. Because a Big 12/SEC matchup in the postseason does nothing but muddy the waters unless it is explicitly part of a postseason playoff that makes sense

yes, they invented a mirror to the Rose Bowl.

It will take the second best teams from the SEC and Big 12 in those cases.

We have a Dome. Its not like your playing in an outdoor stadium.

So what's the point? Is it a middle finger to those not letting the SEC field 3 BCS teams in one year?

The way I see it he invented a chess piece to counteract the Rose Bowl. Now when Delany says, well we can't do away with the way the Rose Bowl is set up.... Slive can say well, we'll have to do away with our Big 12-SEC match up too...

Go away, and let the big boys talk, you're not getting a bowl game in St. Louis. And that's final young man.

So this basically forces the hand of several large football programs to make a move.
1. Notre Dame is now in danger of getting left out.
2. FSU and Clemson are likely headed to the Big 12.
3. VT needs a home.
4. UNC or NC State better grab the last spot in the SEC.

Weren't a couple of of SEC teams those years in other Big Bowl games? Or we just sucked. BTW there were 2 95' Sugar Bowls played that year. just fun fact. Thanks wikipedia

Yup. I hope that it doesn't happen again.

but it does nothing to do this
the PAC and Big 10 will be perfectly happy to keep their Rose Bowl's because they've already argued themselves into a corner about it always being a PAC/Big 10 matchup (which it was not) and that being a good thing (which it is not necessarily).
The SEC and Big 12 doing this just gives the PAC/Big10 political cover and shields them from public criticism that they would have otherwise received.
This is a big step backwards... a common problem with split championships in the 80s and 90s was that you couldn't have a logical 1 vs 2 playoff because of bowl affiliations (even when there were two teams clearly considered to be 1 and 1a)

Technically one of the schools that played in the 1998 Sugar Bowl becomes a member of the SEC in 6 weeks.

What does it hurt? If it doesn't help them back down on their stance, at least we are on equal ground.
In the end it may not help change it to a better setup, but public criticism wasn't going to do anything either.

Yes, if Florida State and Clemson head to the Big 12, the ACC is in trouble.
