Do you think Tulane and Georgia Tech regret leaving the SEC in the 1960's?

Tulane and Georgia Tech were both founding members of the SEC, and both left in the 1960's. I don't know the reasoning behind them leaving, but don't think they would have been asked to leave. If the conference didnt ask Vandy to leave, I doubt they would've asked GT and Tulane to go.

i dont think tulane gives enough of a shite about football to care.
tech i think convinced themselves they were too good academically to compete in football and i think they have more or less stuck to that assertion.

Yes.
I think Tulane would admit it. I think GT knows deep down inside it was a terrible mistake, but I don't think they'd admit it even to themselves, much less anyone else.

We like candy because they're a decent bottom feeder and they make our conference look better education wise.
Idk why they left either. Maybe they thought they just didn't fit the culture that was developing.

Something with GTs coach at the time getting into it with the Bear over something academic related I think. I'm sure someone knows the whole story here.

I think GT regrets it because it would bring more prestige to their wretched, pathetic program. However, for a school as craptastic as theirs, leaving the SEC does have some very bright spots.
1) there's far less football competition so it makes things easier on them.
2) They've always identified themselves as a baseball/basketball school, and the ACC historically seems to be better at those sports than the SEC
3) The ACC is seen as a more of an academic league than the SEC, which I feel like most of the country just sees as "football obsessed, cheating, everyone's dumb but vandy".

Tulane definitely. Georgia Tech probably doesn't. They landed on their feet in a major conference and would have been murdered playing a SEC schedule in the last 40 years. They would have been another Ole Miss.

Can't speak for Tulane but Tech has more of a shot to make it to a good bowl game in the ACC, as seen in recent years. It's worked out for them nicely.

no they got into it because darwin holt broke georgia tech's player chick graning's jaw over what bobby dodd felt like was a cheap shot. he used that incident as one justification for leaving the conference, though if i remember reading correctly, journalist azt the time felt harsh academic standards had more to do with it.

Looking back, I'm sure they do but they felt like their academic missions did not mesh with the other members at the time and that was a very different time as well. Athletics were not the same back then as it is now. Tulane probably regrets it more than anyone else. Ga Tech saw a better fit with the other schools in the ACC.

what we saw at UF this week would never happen at Tech. Ppl like me and my dad who wish they would spend the money they have from the Corp Sponsors...and there is plenty of money, on athletics do know that it will never happen.
Instead they built a think tank and a new Nano Technology building off 10th St.
GT will continue to rotate Ads and HCs and continue to pump out brilliant ppl. That will never change and the real power ppl there are very happy about that.

georgia tech went independent in football and metro conference in basketball for years before joining the ACC didnt they?

Agree, tech has always valued silly, trivial shite like academics and good grades over sports. Which is why they would probably feel they're "above" being in such a pedestrian league like this one. I don't think they regret it at all, not to mention they probably wouldn't want to be in the same league as us anyway.

Dodd's tenure included Georgia Tech's withdrawal from the Southeastern Conference.[9] The initial spark for Dodd's withdrawal was a historic feud with Alabama Crimson Tide Coach Bear Bryant.[11] The feud began when Tech was playing the Tide at Legion Field in Birmingham in 1961. After a Tech punt, Alabama fair-caught the ball. Chick Granning of Tech was playing coverage and relaxed after the signal for the fair catch. Darwin Holt of Alabama continued play and smashed his elbow into Granning's face causing severe fracturing in his face, a broken nose, and blood-filled sinuses. Granning was knocked unconscious and suffered a severe concussion, the result of which left him unable to play football ever again. Dodd sent Bryant a letter asking Bryant to suspend Holt after game film indicated Holt had intentionally injured Granning.[11] Bryant never suspended Holt. The lack of discipline infuriated Dodd and sparked Dodd's interest in withdrawing from the SEC.
Another issue of concern for Dodd was Alabama's and other SEC schools' over-recruitment of players.[11] Universities would recruit more players than they had roster space for. During the summer practice sessions, the teams in question would cut the players well after signing day thus preventing the cut players from finding new colleges to play for. Dodd appealed the SEC administration to punish the "tryout camps" of his fellow SEC members but the SEC did not. Finally, Dodd withdrew Georgia Tech from the SEC in 1963.[11]

UGA fans look down on Tech fans cause they dont value athletics. Tech fans look down on UGA fans cause they think they are stupid.

it was a cheap shot, Bear didnt care though, but dodd dwelled on it rather than moving on.
They also left because dodd saw bear exploiting the rules, not breaking, but pushing them and bitched to the SEC and they did nothing so he unbunched his panties and left

Sewannee had the Iron Men
Tulane founded the Sugar Bowl when they were an SEC member
Georgia Tech was the better program early on - 3 MNC's before they left
Sewanee could not keep up
Tulane put academics first when they declined the Rose Bowl
Goergia Tech withdrew after Bobby Dodd got angry with Bear Bryant
Sewanne at best would be Wake Forest like in the SEC today
Tulane would be overshadowed by the growth of the state schools - most notably LSU
